I bought this book looking for some new routes after exhausting John Brook's "Pathfinder Guide: Skye and the North West Highlands". It contains an excellent geographical variety of walks and one of the best things about it is the fact that all of the walks are on Skye (unlike many other similar books which lump Skye together with mainland Scotland). The author has clearly walked exentsively in the region and has provided several alternatives for most of the routes allowing the walker to modify the route to suit their ability (at least to some extent).

However, a word to the less sure-footed amongst you. Mr Townsend is clearly a highly experienced walker, scrambler and climber and it seemed for many of the routes the difficulty was somewhat understated. Whilst I enjoyed that challenge, at one point in the route up to Sgurr Bhasteir I found myself more than 2,000ft up tackling incredibly difficult and exposed scrambling, when this section of the walk had been described as 'walking is mostly on grass and rock with a little light scrambling'. It is possible (or even likely) that I lost the path, but more detailed route information (such as stick to the right hand side of the ridge to avoid the more difficult scrambling) would have been really useful.

In fact that is probably my major criticism. There is a wealth of information about each route, but this seems to focus heavily on aspects of more academic interest, such as the derivation of the placenames and aspects of historical interest (such as when the mountain was first climbed and by whom).

Although this book seems well written and illustrated, I was very disappointed to find that very few of the 30 walks were suitable for my type of walking. The walks are graded as Easy (7), Moderate(10), Difficult(10) or Very Difficult(3). Of the moderate walks, three are over 13 miles in length and one climbs to over 2400 feet. If, like me, you're more of a rambler than a scrambler then I would recommend Mary Welsh's "Walking The Isle Of Skye" in the Clan Walk Guides series. Hope this helps.

Format: Paperback
This guide covers the highlight walks on the Isle of Skye. Don't expect complete coverage (refer to something like Terry Marsh's book for that), but really the "best" walks. Some walks are easy, but some come with a bit of scrambling. Descriptions are excellent, with useful maps and pictures, and always adding extensions and variations of the main route, and have proved very useful on a recent holiday in Skye. Highly recommended.

Excellent walking book. What can I say, detailed maps, great descriptions, brilliant photography. The book has a wide range of walks easily distinguished in difficulty and they cover the full isle. If you are currently confused by the masses of "walking" guides for Skye, look no further. BUY THIS ONE!!!
