Product Description

Review

'Cicerone is a local publishing firm based in Milnthorpe and is a leading independent UK publisher of guides to walking, trekking, mountaineering and cycling in Britain, Europe and worldwide. Written by leading specialists, Cicerone guides are widely recognised as the most authoritative in their field. It seems to me that wherever you wish to spend your holiday there is a Cicerone guide available to help you to explore the countryside making your stay much more enjoyable. The Isle of Man Walkers Guide is a typical example of their well-researched, useful guidebooks. Firstly, the size of each book (11.5cms x 17cms) will fit easily into an anorak pocket. Then each walk tells us the distance, gives us a detailed coloured map, grid ref for the parking/start/finish, and most important of all - refreshments! Anything of local interest is added wherever appropriate.' (Joyce Wilson, The Keswick Reminder July 2004)

Product Description

The scope for walking on the Isle of Man is considerable. Being an island, and a smallish one at that, many walks touch upon the coastline at some point, and it is probably true to say that on every walk in this book you can see the sea at some stage, ensuring that each of the walks has its own very distinctive flavour. The guide includes: 40 walks around the Isle of Man; an introduction to the Isle of Man today and in the past, the island's flora and fauna, and to walking on the island; information about getting to and around the island; an appendix including longer waymarked walks, useful addresses and organisations; a bibliography and a glossary of Manx place names and terms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Harder going than is made out., 10 Sep 2006

This review is from: The Isle of Man: A Walker's Guide: 40 Walks Around the Island (Cicerone British Walking) (Paperback)
The introduction to this book states 'the emphasis here is on shorter walks, suitable for half days, or for families.' This rather understates the difficulty of the walks. Sharp ascents are highlighted, but there are some very sharp descents where one could easily fall which get no mention.

In some parts the instructions are rather too brief or too vague. Telling you something (like a stile or footbridge) is 'nearby' without telling you if it is to left or right is of little help if you cannot see said item. However, there are not too many examples like this and in most cases the instructions are sufficient.

3.0 out of 5 stars Look around before you buy this, 10 May 2011
This review is from: The Isle of Man: A Walker's Guide: 40 Walks Around the Island (Cicerone British Walking) (Paperback)
Have attempted severak of the walks now and found that at least two of the original routes detailed in the book are no longer passable. Instructions are a little vague also and, even though I live on the Isle of Man and like to think I know it reasonably well, I got lost more than once following the directions. Its evident the book was written a while ago and hasn't been reviewed with lots of changes on the foot paths and markers no longer there. You can fumble your way through but it isn't ideal.

Some good walks amongst some not so good. Better to visit the Tourist Centre at the Steampacket in Douglas and grab a selection of their recommended walks for 20p each. These are updated regularly by the Wardens so you won't risk being stuck somewhere with night falling (and no way of continuing the walk) like we were.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good guide, 10 July 2011
By
JH "jh27" (UK, Cheshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Isle of Man: A Walker's Guide: 40 Walks Around the Island (Cicerone British Walking) (Paperback)
This is a good guide to walks on the island. Don't be put off by how short they are, it is easy to string two or three together into something more challenging. Public transport is good, also cheap, if you need a bus or train to start the walk or to return. The island is remarkably quiet. You will not find any busy sections or areas. If you want to get away from it all you've come to the right place.

Just beware of the authors impish sense of humour. The descent into Glen Maye in walk 21 is described as "delightfully robust". My description would be something along the lines of "A 200 yard descent made hair raising by the polished slate surface. A coconut mat may be a better option than boots for this descent.".
