Fabulous route, average guide, 24 May 2009
This review is from: The Isle of Man Coastal Path: Raad Ny Foillan - The Way of the Gull - The Millenium and Herring Ways (British Long-distance Trails) (Paperback)
Starting with the path itself, The Isle of Man Coastal Path, aka Raad Ny Foillan, aka the Way of the Gull is an absolutely stunning walk. It is fantastically varied, from beach walking, to narrow cliff top paths, to heather covered moorland, to pretty glens, to old railway tracks. Even the least interesting sections (which are to be found on any long distance path), which on the Way of the Gull are a couple of long beach walks are enlivened by the fantastic wildlife.
So, if you are looking for a path of c 100 miles and have a week in which to walk it, this is definitely recommended.
I cannot be so unequivocal in my praise of the guide. It's OK, it's not terrible, by and large it does the job. However it has a number of weaknesses which are annoying rather than being major flaws. The author at times mixes up her lefts and rights. In comon with many other guides she is frequently over detailed in the easy sections and then lacks detail where it would be more useful. Also, the distances are inaccurate, as much as two miles out in the estimate for a day.
So if you do the walk (and I would certainly choose this one over, say the Cotswold Way) buy the book, but don't overly rely on it.
