Product Description

Moira Maclean is summoned by Mother Abbess in the dead of night. Frightened and worried and with no time to dress, she rushes in her night dress and bare feet to discover disturbing news. Her father and brothers have been killed by a rival clan and it is her father’s dying wish that she wed the Highlander warrior he sent to keep her safe.

The stranger appears to have come directly from the battlefield and Moira has little choice but to obey her father’s dying wish. A hasty ceremony and equally hasty consummation, and it’s over, though Moira soon finds that… it has only just begun.

Her father arrives and she learns that the warrior she wed, Ian of the clan Cameron, is her father’s mortal enemy. A bargain is struck between the two men and she is once again left at the convent to live out her days.

But danger lurks in the shadows and Moira carries a secret she’s been warned not to share and with her life in peril Ian returns to take his wife home. It doesn’t take long for Ian to realize that Moira has the power to heal his broken heart and that he has the power to wake her dormant passion and love has the power to bring the unlikely pair together.

3.0 out of 5 stars starts off great, then fizzles 14 Oct 2002
By Deborah MacGillivray HALL OF FAME VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have read several of Donna Fletcher's works in the Irish Eyes Series and loves loved The Irish Devil was bored by Irish Hope. This one falls somewhere between...
The writing was repetitive, a bad flaw, sometimes I got really annoyed at the smugness of the lead female. She keeps making allusions to them doing work and secret learns, but sort of just lets this pass. I hard problem with him being younger, sorry younger men are boys to me(lol). It starts off with a bang, and really great premise, but it just sort of lost steam. I felt like a horse being lead in circles.
It is an oKay read, just rather disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A love that survives deception 3 Mar 2002
By DiAnn Fields - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Setting - Scotland 1513. Moira Maclean has spent 17 years in a convent her father took her to at the young age of 12 years old. Moira has adjusted well to convent life and has learned to be strong and independence. She, however, does not know about love.
Ian Cameron, laird of the clan Cameron of Glencoe, is a warrior and proud leader of his people. Moira's father battles Ian and his clan and sees Ian as his mortal enemy.
Ian goes to the convent and tells Moira that her father has died - she must marry him to end further fighting between the clans. They are immediately wed and their marriage is consummated quickly(not with much skill or pleasure for either). Immediately after, Moira's father arrives at the convent very alive and furious that Moira has wed his most hated enemy.
Moira's father tells Ian to leave his daughter at the convent - she is too old and barren to satisfy her young husband's needs(Ian is 25 years old). Ian reluctantly agrees and leaves, but two months later comes back for Moira and she has a surprise for him....she is pregnant!
With a troubled beginning to their marriage, Ian and Moira struggle to make their marriage work. There are several obstacles; someone is trying to kill Moira, Ian wants a real marriage while the naive Moira doesn't understand all that he wants, and problems with facing her father again.
Ian and Moira's relationship is wonderful in this story. Moira is a multi-layered heroine who is strong and has knowledge about numbers, agriculture, etc. that help manage their lives. She is a vital part of the success of their relationship and proves that intelligence is just as exciting as outer beauty. Ian, though feeling guilty of how their marriage started, cares and loves Moira as his wife and his partner. The exchanges between Ian and Moira are fun to read and challenging to both parties. There are interesting secondary characters, Anne and Blair, and Ian's sister Brianna which compliment the entire book.
If you have read Donna Fletcher's Irish Eyes books - The Irish Devil and Irish Hope, you will love this book! Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Romance 14 Aug 2013
By Mary R. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book when it was first published in 2003 and now own it on my Kindle. I like having books available on my Kindle for when I travel or when waiting for an appointment, it's not bulky.

Ms. Fletcher never disappoints me. She always has a plot, not just the romance. I also like the fact that all her heroines aren't perfect. They're not all beautiful, some are weak, some strong, one may have a disability or fighting fears or be older and brilliant. But the one fact I enjoy most in her stories is that the hero is always strong, brave and madly in love with the heroine. Some readers may not find this their cup of tea, but it's my cup of tea along with a plate of cookies and a box of chocolates (food to survive) because I can't put the darn book down. The heroes may be strong and demanding but there is a kindness in them that melts your heart.

Other reviewers have mentioned what the story is about so I would just say buy it and form your own opinion and if you're a true romance reader like I am, you will not be disappointed. I must add if you love the heroes in the romance stories you will want to buy the sequel to this book, which is LOVE ME FOREVER. It's Ian's sister, Brianna's story, but the hero, Royce, is to sigh for. You may need two cups of tea and a very large box of chocolate for that book. Happy reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars "glad I am that your own silent heart woke along with mine" 11 Jun 2013
By cathyr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Plot:
To force a truce between their two clans, Ian Cameron marries Moira Maclean, then leaves. He returns for her two months later when the lives of herself and her unborn child is endangered. Over the next months, Ian and Moira work to find between them a love and a respect that will last them HEA.

Comments:
- Historical (Medieval) Romance. Scotland, 1513, near the Isle of Mull.
- 6921 kindle locations, 344 pages
- m/f - not frequent, reasonably explicit. First instance is rapid, painful with questionable consent, and results in pregnancy. Bedroom scenes are integral to the story, enhancing and emphasising their growing love.
- Moira is 29, Ian is 25. The age difference is discussed; she is expected to be barren as a result of her "great age".
- Moira has spent the last 17 years in a convent. Her understanding of men is limited.

Opinion:
"His deception had left a bitter taste in her and while she accepted her fate she intended to deal with it in her own way. It was the one way she could retain her own pride and maintain her independence." p.111, loc2131

A nice, easy Medieval romance which emphasises the role of women in society and the romantic search for love. A straightforward mystery coupled with sweet romance makes a nice, comfortable read.

On the downside, some of the dialogue and situations with Moira (and Anne) are stilted and forced as Fletcher emphasises her separation from "normal" society and unusual upbringing and intelligence. It feels like the author was trying to portray Moira as "genius but innocent" and while that's what we get, we don't exactly *like* her.

A good book. Could be better. But worth a read. 3.5 stars rounded up.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awe-inspiring love story 22 April 2002
By Eirenne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have read several of Donna Fletcher's novels and have never found them lacking in the least. Isle of Lies does not disappoint, in fact it ranks as my favorite of all time. I fell in love with Moira and Ian from the start. I truly enjoyed watching their love for one another grow. Ian's concern over his wife's condition was touching. Moira was strong willed and determined, the way a heroine should be. I did want the story to end as I could have continued to read more about Moira and Ian. I anxiously await Brianna's story which will be out sometime in early 2003. Keep up the good work Donna. I am captivated by stories set in Ireland and Scotland - I do hope you continue to write more.
