Product Description

Product Description

Designed for the discerning tourist and island devotee, the "Pevensey Island Guide to Bute" describes everything the visitor needs to know about the island's heritage, landscape, climate, flora and fauna. Bute is an island in the Firth of Clyde, nestling against the ancient Gaelic heartland of Argyll, from which it is separated by the famously scenic Kyles of Bute. It is a beautiful island, with elements of the splendour of the Highlands and the more pastoral landscape of the Lowlands. The views south - to the mountains of Arran - are spectacular, while the flooded river valleys of the more sheltered Kyles have scenery best appreciated from the decks of a Clyde steamer. With pristine sandy beaches, an interesting and diverse landscape, and prehistoric sites, Bute is fascinating to explore. The text also gives useful information on services, facilities and places to visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book. Beautiful Pictures and Lovely Words, 8 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Isle of Bute (Pevensey Island Guides) (Paperback)
I bought one copy last summer and I have now had to buy many more copies for family and friends. Seldom does a book so capture the "feel" of its subject. Though nothing can beat a trip to Bute, this book is the best "virtual alternative" I have seen to date.

I learnt so much about Bute from this great little book! It was an enjoyable book to read with lots of interesting facts. Would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finding out about Bute both past and present day. Beautiful photographs as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely irrelevant in 2010, 26 July 2010
This review is from: The Isle of Bute (Pevensey Island Guides) (Paperback)
This book is still being peddled as the definitive Guide to The Isle of Bute in Scotland. Even when it was published in 1999 most of the information was dated or gleaned from superlative publicity material written by avid tourist officials who had never been to Bute. All this "Doon the Watter" reiteration comes from one or two articles written about Rothesay and Dunoon in the 1960s and forever used as an authoratative source. Today there are no Clyde steamers except The Waverley that does a tourist tour around the Clyde estuary during the month of August. However, there are two spanking new luxurious ferries every hour to Bute from Wemyss Bay on the A78 between Greenock and Largs, and connected by new fast trains to either Glasgow Airport and Glasgow Central Station.
Most of the information in this book is out-dated, irrelevant, and strangely opinionated, and many of the very relevant features that constitute a good Weekend Break or Outdoor Holiday on the island today are simply not here.
This book should be deleted.
