Product Description

CD Description

On ISLANDS, MEZZOFORTE sounds much more acoustic than usual. Instead of the keyboards, the brilliant Eythor Gunnarsson prefers the grand piano more and more. The drums of Gulli Briem sound more "jazzy", Bruno Müller's guitar is funky and smacking in a clubbing style, the wind section uses its space for characteristic solos and Johann Asmundsson keeps the whole thing together with his grooving bass. Is ISLANDS a perfect fusion CD? Yes, but why such categorization? MEZZOFORTE have produced a fantastic album. With music that sounds timelessly beautiful and marvellously relaxed and elegant. Anyone who has a chance to experience this band with its furious instrumentalists in a live show will know what artistic fire is in this formation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of their better albums 2 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Since the guitarist and main songwriter Fridrik Karlsson left before this album I wondered how they would cope. The answer is they didn't.

There is nothing here that makes the album an essential purchase. Production is poor and instead of their bright vibrant sound everything sounds soft warm and musty as if they were after a 70s recording feel to proceedings. The guitar solos are numerous and overbearing. There are no memorable tracks and it was a chore to sit through.

They need to have a discussion about the direction to take in the future. Maybe Fridrik can be persuaded to come back as a songwriter as without him there's not a lot here.

I am hoping this is just an aberration. If the next one is like this then oh dear.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay - but then again it's not... 4 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Mezzoforte is my number one favourite band - which is probably why I find this album so disappointing. It is the first album without Fridrik Karlsson (the guitarist), and the lack of his writing-skills is apparent. The music is so and so, a bit too boring and never with the usual "funkyness" and nerve. Still it is a Mezzoforte album and a must-have, but it is not really good... :o(

5.0 out of 5 stars Still able to surprise surprise.... 28 May 2013
By Tolkien
Format:Audio CD
Mezzoforte is still a band with an exceptional ability to play together, great musicians and the new members fits in really well.
Yes the style is new on this CD "Island", more new jazz than funk, more grand piano, but the great Mezzoforte foundation is still very much there. I am a dedicated 80s Mezzoforte funk fan, but find that there is room for this style too.
I recently went to a Mezzoforte gig in a small club where Islands numbers were performed and the live sound is still brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Islands is Awesome! 9 July 2012
By MemphisMike - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Mezzoforte's album, Islands, is awesome! It has a mix of all their playing styles. Very crisp, clean, and tight, as always. And jazzier than ever. Two tracks, 'Suitcase' and 'Funky Homer' will probably get radio airplay.

I especially like 'Here and Now', because it has that great mix of everything in one tune. Give it up for, Gulli Briem, on drums!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear.. 7 Dec 2012
By Leong - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I bought most of Mezzo's CD from Octopus to Volcano, except Monkey Fields. Monkey Fields feels too 90's poppish and it was not for me. My favorites are Rising, Observation, Daydream, Forward.

Volcano was too sleepy for me and the trumpet is a bit annoying. Perhaps he should play the Yam Motif instead.
E.Gunnarsson is one of my favorite synth player but did not shine in Volcano.

I was more cautious after Volcano. I will not buy "Island". It is another sleepy & jazzy album.
E.Gunnarsson should emphasize more on the Nord Lead/Wave. I like the 80's and early 00's Mezzoforte band. They are bold, synthy, melodic and funky. That is their core. It seems to dissipate now. Perhaps the band is too big now and everybody wants to chip in and they lost their core focus.. Perhaps the Fridrik factor is also missing.

E.Gunnarsson, Johann and Briem are still best in class. Bruno and Oskar are quite good in the concert.
E.G and Fridrik are very good song writers.

But I dont have the urge to buy their album after Volcano. Maybe it is my age. With their current kind of music, I lost them in the jungle with other bands. They don't stand out anymore.

Now, I am inspired by some Japanese Fusion jazz bands who plays well on Synth and EWI.

Wish Mezzoforte better luck on next album.

Sorry if I offend anyone.
