Historic Treasure, Peril, and Adventure 30 May 2012
By Benjamin Devey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Both my young sons and I enjoyed Island of Thieves. Josh Lacey pulls you in from the start and delivers a tale of adventure and intrigue. Tom Trelawney gets handed off to his uncle Harvey, who was off to Peru to handle some business. Tom insists that's not the way to take responsible for a minor, and tags along for the adventure. They get mixed in with an organized crime kingpin, and Harvey comes clean with Tom--He's on the trail of Francis Drake's buried treasure. The story moves along at a clip, keeping entertainment on top. Plenty of adventure, with a sensitivity to the moral issues of right and responsibility.
Fine writing, cinematic style, and wonderful characters. 10 May 2012

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Young Tom Trelawney is a boy who always gets in trouble. Tom's dad is the sort of guy who never gets in trouble. It's only when he meets his Uncle Harvey that Tom begins to learn what it really means to be a Trelawney, and discovers a few hidden talents that serve him well on an adventure to Peru filled with intrigue, gunplay, and treasure.

Island of Thieves is a fast paced, very well written tale of adventure that is sure to enthrall tween and teen readers. Tom is an excellent narrator, exhibiting just the perfect combination of confidence and terror as he follows his Uncle on a trek to discover the buried treasure of Sir Frances Drake. The author expertly tells the story of the discovery of the map, the encounters with Peruvian criminals, the decoding of the secret journal of Drake's cousin, and the brilliant escape. There is just a ton of adventure packed into these 227 pages and kids will find that it is absolutely impossible to put this book down as Tom and his Uncle travel from one life threatening peril to another. This story reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies with its non-stop action and cinematic style.

Tom and Harvey are both very well developed characters and I admired how they dealt with all their troubles with a typical English aplomb. Their dialogue is often hilarious and I fell in love with both of them. I hope this is just the first in a series because I just can't wait to see what sort of trouble Tom and Harvey get into next. This is old school storytelling at its finest, and not to be missed.
