I've been a fan of the Railway Series my whole life and I enjoy all the stories and this book is a must have for any Railway Series fan as it has all the creative facts about the Island of Sodor, its people, history and engines. The Rev.W.Awdry and his brother have done great work on the whole thing and its a shame that they're not here on earth anymore, but the legacy of their name still lives on.

The best Thomas book ever. 21 Mar. 2005
A Kid's Review - Published on
Format: Hardcover
It's a disgrace that this book is out of print, because it is a true gem.

When the Rev Awdry wrote the original Thomas books, he and his brother George created the Island of Sodor as a setting for them. This book describes the island in fabulous detail; everything from its towns and villages, its railways, its people, its history, and of course its engines, as well as maps, photos and illustrations. It is full to bursting with interesting information, such as the fact that there have been two Henrys, and that there is an electric branch line on the Fat Controller's railway.

A word of caution though. Despite the fact that this is listed under children's books, it isn't suitable for children. There's no adult content, but the engines aren't referred to as living beings like they are in the other books, and there are some very dark references such as the mention of engines being scrapped and peoples' deaths. So if you're thinking of buying this for your toddler, think again!

But if you're between eight and eighty (that's what age it was recommended for in the foreword) and are interesting in "the story behind the stories," I would recommend this book. The only problem is finding someone who isn't selling it for over a hundred dollars!
Wilbert Awdry himself like the one I have 4 Mar. 2015

This book is truly a rare gem for any fan of The Railway Series and the original Thomas the Tank Engine series. Plus you'd be lucky enough to even get a copy signed by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry himself like the one I have. I promise anyone who reads this book all the way through will never look at Thomas and Friends the same way again! Plus the book actually came several days before they said it would. I'm beyond satisfied with my order.
