Can it really be 25 years since we celebrated Island Records 25th anniversary? Well no actually! The Island Story CD celebrated the twenty-five years from 1962 (when Chris Blackwell moved the Island labels headquarters to the UK from Jamaica) to 1987. This Island Life CD covers the fifty year period since the labels foundation in 1959. Around a dozen tracks appear on both collections, and the actual choice of music was always going to be difficult with so much to choose from!
Some reviewers have given low marks for content but I think that is a little unfair; for around a tenner you actually get three CDs of excellent music, presented in an attractive slipcase and a small booklet of track details and sleeve illustrations. For those people lucky enough to have caught the BBC TV documentary "Keep on Running", shown on BBC4 as part of the channels tribute to Islands 50th anniversary, the tracks chosen for this collection will make perfect sense. Each track and each act has been important at a certain point in the labels history - from the first hit with Millie to the major seller Cat Stevens to superstars U2 and up-to-date with Sugarbabes and The Fratellis. Each act, each track chosen, is there for a reason.
There are other Island collections available which cater for more specific areas of the labels output, and one of those may suit your individual taste better - but please don't dismiss this one just because it doesn't have you favourite track or artist! This is an excellent collection with two discs covering a huge range of musical styles and eras, and a third disc of fun for collectors and lovers of the unusual. At the price Island are almost giving it to you - buy it and join in with the labels celebration!
