A modest but very good film about a forceful landing of an airplane, I think a robust DC-3 in inmediate afterwar of WW II over an unexplored region of Northern Canada owing to ice and loss of route, fail of compass and radio or something else. I don't know much about airplanes and flying, but the situation seems verosimile owing bad weather, an aurora borealis and the subsequent magnetic and desorientative effects over a machine still far of the perfections of today technology, this movie shows how these airmen were brave artists in a great proportion. Only a surprising detail, as when they fall, the wath aboard marks clearly about 23,30 hours while outside we see a white inmense clear plain in full daylight.

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
As filmmaking, William Wellman's long unseen Island in the Sky is textbook professionalism about textbook professionals - in this case John Wayne's pilot and his crew downed in uncharted Labrador and the various pilots trying to locate them before a storm finishes them off. There are no surprises (aside from the horrific sight of Andy Devine in swim trunks!), there's an excess of narration at times (much of it delivered by Wellman himself), and it doesn't stand up to the best of Wellman's aviation pictures, but it's good, solid entertainment, convincingly staged and boasting a superb Tiomkinesque score by Emil Newman.

The extras package on Paramount's DVD is pretty impressive as well, boasting a good selection of featurettes, an interesting audio commentary from the director's son and supporting cast members, stills gallery, newsreel footage and even John Wayne's introduction to co-star James Arness' Gunsmoke TV series.

Disappointing! 11 Feb 2012
I can really see why this is an overlooked movie from the Duke, because the plot is so boring and the acting performances are wooden, especially the Duke's performance as a tough pilot and their is a shocking scene which Andy Devine jumps into a swimming pool with his swimming shorts on! Even if you are a fan of the Duke like me, please don't watch this movie, because you are wasting your time and I couldn't wait for the movie to finish!
