Product Description

Product Description
In the second century AD, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius made a deal with the barbarian Sarmations: the fighting would stop if they supplied Rome with 8000 horsemen. They complied, and thus began the Roman life of Ariantes, warrior-prince in a land not his own.

5.0 out of 5 stars a really great read, 8 Mar 2004
By Travelling Jen (North Yorkshire UK) - See all my reviews
Who knows whether the details of the barbarians serving as cavalry on roman Hadrian's Wall are correct? When you read this book it won't seem important. The plot is such that it keeps you reading into the night. The characters are sympathetic and believable. The military action rings true. The people in this novel live on with you long after you have finished the book. What a shame it wasn't 1000 pages! If you like historical fiction with a superbly accurate feel, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is historically accurate, 23 Jan 2005
By Dr Paul (CAMBRIDGE, UK) - See all my reviews
Note the earlier review concerned about the use of the term "British". While a single state covering the island of Britain is quite recent the Romans did refer to the island of Britain as "Brittania" and the inhabitants as "British". The British language at that time was a Celtic language which after the Anglo-Saxons arrived became confined to today's Wales, Scotland and Cornwall and became Gaelic, Welsh and Cornish. The references to Britain and British in the book are perfectly reasonable

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the kind of book you wish were longer., 5 Aug 1998

Island of Ghosts falls into what I call the Mary Renault School -- historical fiction that is so compellingly good that you end up believing this is how it actually happened. Gillian Bradshaw has taken a historical "footnote"--the arrival of Sarmatian cavalry in Britain--and turned it into a rousingly good story. I sat down and read this book in one afternoon, then re-read it the next day. Characters and their motivations are for the most part quite believable (although the villainess was just a tad extreme) and I found myself caring about what happened to them. This book is a great example of historical fiction, with just a little romance thrown in for good measure. I am quite a fan of the author's -- I have read all of her work -- and while I might not rate this as the best of her books, it's right up there near the top. If you read this book, you will not be disappointed -- I swear on fire.
