Amazon.co.uk Review

An intriguing action adventure set in the near future, The Island finds those who survived a mass global contamination living in a contained and highly controlled world. Their actions are controlled, their lives are routine, and the only hope is to win lottery and be sent to a mysterious island, the so-called last surviving, uncontaminated paradise on the planet.

Naturally enough, things are quite what they initially seem, at least in the eyes of Ewan McGregror’s Johnny Two Alpha. Along with Scarlet Johansen’s Jordan Two Delta, they soon find out what happens when you don’t fully comply with the rules of this deeply controlled world, and the stage is thus set for some action-packed cinema.

Given the film’s disappointing box office returns though, you could be forgiven for thinking that all is not well with The Island, and truthfully, it’s a movie with problems. Its pacing feels a little off, and there are moments when the script does the film no favours at all.

Yet take The Island as a popcorn flick, and you’ll more than likely find yourself enjoying a good couple of hours of solid entertainment. Sure, ultimately they could have made more of the premise, and produced a tighter movie. But what’s on screen usually works well enough, and the two stars don’t do badly with the material at their disposal.--Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars Sci Fi Action, 3 Dec 2005
This review is from: The Island [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
For some reason this film was slated upon its release, which did lower my expectations a little when I went to see it. That aside this is a pretty good film. Set in what appears to be the very distant future, Ewan McGreger and Scarlet Johansson are two of the few surviving humans living in a large Radiation proof shelter, where a lottery system decides who gets to go to 'The Island', the last part of earth that is still inhabitable. But dont let this simple plot put you off, all is not as it seems, there are several major plot twists that completely change the film. I dont really want to spoil the film for you so I wont reveal them, although Im sure other reviewers will anyway!

The action scenes are well directed and the acting is good. Ewan and Scarlet have great chemistry and provide some comical moments, Sean Bean is on top form and Steve Buscemi delivers as usual.

The look of the film is great and the special effects dont overshadow the script, which raises some interesting questions about humanity.

If youre looking for an enjoyable action film this is for you, dont be put off by its poor show at the box office, this is a big, expensive film that delivers when and where it should.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Action Thriller!!!!!!, 23 Nov 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Island [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
Sadly, this I feel, Is one of the most underrated films of 2005- it didnt do particularly well at the box office, and not many people went to see it at the cinema (mainly due to poor publicity)
However- i went to see it, and i can assure you that it is edge-of-your seat stuff!
The basic storyline, is that Liclion 6 Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Delta Two Jordan (Scarlett Johansson)think that they (allong with a few other people) are the only people to survive a global contamination, hence why they live in some space age facillity.
The only highlight of thier mundane lives, is to be entered into a lottery to go to "the island" -the only part of the world left uncontaminated.
But when someone realises that the lottery may not be as random as they think it is, Liclion and Delta start a race to the truth and to find out if theres more to thier lives than they think...
- I know that was a pretty sketchy plot outline, but i dont want to give anything away!!!
The special effects are amazing, and reflect the huge budget which was spent on the film!!
Both lead characters were excellent, and we see a more action hero like character from Scarlett Johansson, showing her amazing acting talents which here are very different to the dreamy "Charlotte" we saw in "Lost in translation".
If you havent seen the flim and cant descide about it, -trust me- its worth every penny, and its something you WILL watch more than once!!!

HD DVD picture waow, one of the best I've seen. Lovely use of colour. Great sets and special effects throughout the movie. Soundtrack excellent too.

The only Michael Bay movie I've so far liked. His films are usually too trumped up in storyline and effects for my liking.

In its own way an original science fiction movie which may have been underrated on its release in cinemas. Perhaps people bad mouthed it because they thought it tread on similar ground to Minority Report, The Matrix, Gattaca or even Coma or THX 1138 perhaps.

Yes I did think of these films watching this as I suppose futuristic movies are all gonna hit on similar themes like cloning, technology, the unknown and forbidden. The Island draws on these with a fresh perspective.

The cast were all great. This movie is very professionally made and totally believable compared to some of todays SFX movies that are just so OTT and false looking.

I don't want to get into the plot, storyline as it's an easy one to spoil.

Just to say this is quite a gem of a movie that will endure the test of time.
