This book gives really good overview of Islam (from religion to history). I found it very useful book for my studies. And it is very well written and very easy to understand. I really recommend this book to all who look for his/her first contact with Islam.

Malise Ruthven gives a clear account of the development of Islam and the challenges it poses. Though not an easy "leisure" read, there is a degree of compulsion to understand Islam in its own terms (you have to keep referring to the glossary of terms), and the story is compelling, the style clear. A very good introduction to a complex topic.

This is a compulsory text on one of my modules at university and it is the most accessible and well written book on Islam that I have found. As someone with no knowledge of Islam, it entertained and informed. So many political books are full of wonderful theories and ideas but terrible written, by contrast this was a joy to read. Each chapter is introduced by a story of some kind to set the scene for the informative section which works wonderfully well. It really helped me to understand Islam and Islamism.
