BBC Review

After the first listen you might be forgiven for wondering if we need another Tinariwen-like act, especially as Tinariwen do what they do so well. The sound on Ishumar is without a question in the same vein as that of the godfathers of desert blues (Toumast's Moussa Ag Keyna is in fact a former member of Tinariwen). But dismissing this album as a mere carbon copy would be missing out on something quite amazing.

Call it desert blues or Touareg rock'n'roll, it's the hypnotic, addictive groove which makes it so easily appealing to a mainstream audience unfamiliar with African music. After a few listens to Ishumar you'll be hooked!

As with Tinariwen, the electric guitar is the most important instrument here. Coupled with singer-songwriter and guitarist Ag Keyna's rebel attitude it makes for perfect fare for a rock audience, too. Ag Keyna is a former Touareg freedom fighter. The Touaregs are a Berber ethnic group, whose immense homeland covers parts of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria and Libya. Clashes between Touareg freedom fighters and Mali's and Niger's military resulted in thousands of casualties and Ag Keyna himself was seriously wounded in 1993 and taken to France. There he continued his fight through music. He got together with his niece, percussionist and haunting vocalist Aminatou Goumar and the French multi-instrumentalist/ producer Dan Levy who whilst not on the cover can be seen as the third member of Toumast (meaning 'identity').

The main criticism slung at this genre is that it can get a bit samey but the tracks on Ishumar - all sung in Berber Arabic and mainly about the Touareg struggles - include enough musical variety to avoid being remotely boring. Particularly dazzling are the foot-stomping opening track ''Ikalane Walegh'' and ''Maraou Oran (For 12 Moons)'', which Ag Keyna wrote when hearing that 12 of his fellow freedom fighters had been assassinated.

Ishumar may not be breaking new ground but it's certainly an outstanding album that will undoubtedly add to the popularity of desert blues and hopefully continue introducing new audiences to African music. --Ilka Schlockermann

CD Description

Lead singer Moussa Ag Keyna who, together with Aminatou and French producer Dan Levy, has created a sublime new African desert sound, but behind that smile, the nomad on his camel hides many problems. A nomad, who has spent his whole life amongst the compounds of the Sahara desert, is loath to leave. He follows his camels on the quest to find water, he tends his animals whilst absorbed in song, he wraps his face in the turban that protects him from the harsh desert sands. This is the life he has always known, a life he doesn't want to leave behind. But political persecution and drought are destroying this existence. Moussa Ag Keyna was driven from the struggle of liberation by injury to France where he changed his gun for a guitar. Despite the pain and sadness in the songs, there is also a passion for the desert that emerges through the lively rhythm, the vibrant melody and an irresistible pop sensibility.

I should imagine this band may find it irritating to be constantly be mentioned in the same breath as a certain better-known Tuareg act, but like a lot of people, i cottoned onto this band as a result of becoming a big Tinariwen fan and wanting to discover whether there were any acts playing the same type of music.

The main personnel behind Toumast were also forged in the civil wars of the '90s, and their music contains the same soulfulness born of such troubled times. There is the desert-blues electric guitar backed by more traditional instruments, the hypnotic rhythms, and bewitching vocals - again all as in Tinariwen's sound.

But there are also differences - the music has a particularly spontaneous feel, soulful but fairly upbeat. In fact there is something about the overall production sound, and the way that the band is happy to simply carrying on playing, stripping the sound down then building it up again, without even the vocals accompanying, that reminds me of a 70s funk outfit.

This album is full of life and warmth, and unerringly conjures up pictures of (cliche alert...) dancing around a desert campfire, making it a definite must-buy for anyone interested in having the sound of the desert in their home.

I loved this collection from track one right through to the end. Obviously very similar to Tinariwen so you know what you're getting- something that sounds like John Lee Hooker jamming with the Ayatollha Khomeini! But the sound is slightly softer here and the guitar playing slightly more western in style, less Hooker than Quicksilver Messenger Service. It's not really tuareg-lite, it's just that if you like that hard edged production sound of Tinariwen's "water is life" as opposed to the ramshackle warmth of their radio tisdas sessions you may find this a little pastel in comparison.I'm all for rough edges myself but I fell in love with this quite easily. It's still soul rebel music, born of pain and dispossession and full of passion. Highly recommended.

I suppose it was inevitable that other bands would jump on the Tinarawen bandwagon, if you'll forgive the pun. This band is similar in style but having the female vocals makes it an interesting change from Tinarawen. Although I still think the latter are the kings of this music. Though if you like Tinarawen then you'll definitely like Toumast.
