Product Description

The story of Queen Isabella, who sought revenge on her husband Edward II, and her lover Sir Roger Mortimer, who masterminded the invasion that accomplished it.

The marriage of Isabella of France and Edward II of England in 1308 is a union meant to secure lasting peace. For years, Isabella is a loyal wife, who repeatedly salvages her husband's kingship, even as she endures his neglect. When she finally speaks out against Edward's favorite, Lord Hugh Despenser, her income, lands and children are taken from her. In an age when women are not supposed to openly defy their husbands, Isabella vows to get her children back and have her revenge on Despenser -- no matter what the cost.

Imprisoned in the Tower of London for leading a rebellion against King Edward, Mortimer escapes with Isabella's help and finds refuge in the French court. But when Isabella arrives in Paris to negotiate a peace treaty, it is a temptation the ambitious Mortimer cannot resist.

(The sequel to Isabeau, The King Must Die, is now available on Kindle.)

Superb! 21 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A captivating read, rich in seamless historical detail and strong, memorable characters. The innocent little heroine wins our immediate sympathy when, at fourteen, she is married to handsome, homosexual Edward the Second of England. We pity her more and more as she is shamed and neglected in favour of his male lovers. But Isabella quickly wins our admiration as she matures into womanhood. We then cheer her on as she courageously defies her weak but stubborn husband and, with her lover, Sir Roger Mortimer, begins to plot against him. Her narrator's voice is compelling and likeable, while Mortimer's conveys the strength and sensitivity that Edward sadly lacks. An irresistable 'must'for all historical fiction fans. Highly recommended.

A cracking good read 2 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed reading this book, I am a keen reader of historical fiction and love this period, I tend to favour Phillipa Gregory, but seem to be up to date on all her books at the moment. This being the case I have been casting around for other authors and whilst interesting and factual many I have found have been a bit dry and dusty a bit like being back at school in history!!

This one I found to catch my interest and kept me looking forward to find more time to get back to it!!

Isabellas nonsense
This book is a complete travesty of historical faction--neither a romantic novel or a serious attempt at portraying the events surrounding the life and fall of Edward 11. Read more

A Good Read
This book is a surprisingly good read. I say surprisingly because initially I was put off by the image of the front cover, which has a look of chick-lit about it. Read more
