There are several astronomical names used in Harry Potter such as Sirius which is the brightest star in Canis Major - The Big Dog which fits with his ability to turn into a, well, big dog. Bellatrix is also the name of a star.
Does JK have any links to the world of astronomy or are the names just researched for the books?
I believe the reason that constellations run through the black family, is their arrogance, also to give the books fantastic and mythical imagery. Draco Malfoy is another example of his parents arrogance, naming their son after dragons; also to flag him as a villain to the reader.
I feel you are onto a loser in trying to convert the Harry Potter fans using this forum. Generally speaking I would say that fans have thoroughly enjoyed the books as they were intended, ie as fast moving adventure stories using the genre of 'magic' to allow the unexpected, improbable and downright amusing to occur. If you had actually READ the books, you would understand how ridiculous the link you have supplied is.
Having studied the classics, JKR made use of her studies and knowledge of, eg Latin, to fabricate character names and spells that are innocently used, memorised and practiced by youngsters and young at heart worldwide. She also made use of fabulous creatures and fabled folklore tales - and also highly suspicious sources for names like, eg one of Dumbledore's, 'Brian'.
But thanks for the effort anyway. Lumos! and accio keyboard!
I was curious what they had to say, but I stopped watching when they started to compare J.K. Rowling to H.P. Blavatsky. The person who thought that up, should start writing fantasy books :o) Everything JKR said about writing before that, is rather common amongst writers. Every writer gets ideas, thoughts, images, etc, from which they compose their stories, and the source of JKRs and their inspiration - as you said P.Cobb - comes from their studies, experiences and knowledge (subconscious or otherwise), combined with a capability to make unusual combinations, and to think outside the box. I think, it's called creativity ;o)
PS There is something I could say about inspiration from a spiritual source outside the writer, but I don't want to offend any Christians who do have the right sense about fiction.
PPS Why Twilight is always compared to HP is beyond me, btw. Except that that both authors seemed to have a few things in common, and their books became very unexpectedly very successful. Speaking of Twilight, there might be something in the assumption that the Twilight books contain some dangerous content for vulnerable young girls, but only because they (the books, that is) seem to suggest that it is wonderfully romantic to date an ex-killer who is still a possible threat to her life. (Alright, I admit I've only read the first chapters and seen the first movie. Sorry, if I got a wrong impression of the story)
There was an article in Wired.com about the questionable lessons learned in Twilight. Originally I wouldn't read twilight because it was geared toward women/girls, now its because .... nah its for the same reason, but sparkly vampires would also put me off reading about them.
Vampires drink blood, they do not sparkle they are bloody. Even the sad losers who act like vampires to make themselves feel special.
The Twilight books are completely and utterly 'Mary-Sue' fanfics, which is a large part of their appeal to teenage girls (and the bit of teenage girl left in me!). Everything just taps in perfectly to teenage girls' wishlists - gorgeous, wealthy boyfriend who completely adores you and finds you utterly irresistable, whose parents think that you are wonderful, other boys who lust after you, and just enough angst and 'Romeo & Juliet-ness'. So what if boyfriend's a vampire - he's still gorgeous and sparkly and wealthy and loves you too much to drain your blood for lunch. Oh, and then *spoiler alert in case anyone's worried* he's going to marry you and turn you into a vampire so that you'll be immortal and superfast and superstrong and supergraceful and by the way, you'll also have extra vampire psychic abilities (and did I mention the amazing, very married, vampire sex?).
