Product Description

People living in North America owe much of their heritage, culture, and even style of living to England. In B is for Big Ben: An England Alphabet, young readers are given an armchair tour of a country that may be small in size (smaller than the state of New York!) but a giant in history, achievement, and influence. Of course, everyone has heard about England's famous kings and queens, and castles and monuments. But did you know that many of our everyday conveniences started as British ideas? Charles Babbage designed the first calculating machine in the nineteenth century. And guess what contribution came from the Earl of Sandwich? From the ancient stillness of Stonehenge to the picturesque charm of the Lake District to the bustling streets of London, B is for Big Ben reveals the many treasures, past and present, of merry old England.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as earlier books in the series. 18 Jan 2013

My class is doing a study of the United Kingdom. We are doing a project on Big Ben-thought this book would be perfect. Opened to the letter B, expecting to see Big Ben. NOPE-only on the cover. Disappointing! There is good information and like other books in the series, there is the simple text for the story and then more in depth text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 15 May 2012

Every time we visit a new city, state, or country, I get my daughter the Alphabet book for it. I've been collecting them since she was in kindergarden, and now finishing 2nd grade, we have a library full! They are great to read to the class, any grade, and the extra info in the text boxes is very interesting as well as educational. I learned more about the state, Georgia, that I have lived in my entire life from this book! When we have new classmates, neighbors or friends that move here from out of state, I gift them the "P is for Peach" Georgia Alphabet book. Never has a gift been more well received. I would HIGHLY recommend any of these books in the entire collection!!!!
