Product Description

Product Description

The IRWIN carbide tipped mortar rake kit is a power tool accessory for the fast and efficient removal of mortar and cement joints in brickwork repointing applications and for chasing out channels for the installation of cable, pipes and switchboxes.

Supplied with 3 aluminum reduction rings (41mm, 42.5mm and 43mm), meaning that the sole plate fits the most popular angle grinders on the market.

The sole plate ensures consistent clearance depth and is adjustable for variable clearance depths. It is less intrusive to surrounding brickwork and is a good alternative to working with demolition chisels or grinding discs, which can easily cause damage. Please read the instruction manual carefully before using the mortar rake. Only use mortar rakes with adaptor and sole plate.

The IRW10507268 Mortar Rake Starter Kit comes with the following:1 x Sole plate.2 x 3-cutters (10mm).1 x Adaptor.3 x Aluminium reduction rings (41mm, 42.5mm and 43mm).

Great little attachment for the grinder.
Saved me a lot of work on the outside of the house.
Removed the mortar fast, but a bit on the dusty side, strongly suggest attaching a vacuum to the rake.

I got this to grind out before i re-pointed my house. It's built well enough & i'm sure it's okay for small jobs. However I couldn't use it for two reasons. 1, my brick work is too unevan and the tool was actually grinding slots in the bricks. 2, It was quite slow. If you don't mind the mess you are better using a 6mm raking grinding wheel on a Angle Grinder.

I tried hard to attach this to my DeWalt, which seems to need a collar somewhere between the two larger supplied options. I guess I could have hit it really hard with a couple of hammers and got it on, but in the end I bought an Armeg 175mm mortar rake chisel to fit my SDS drill, and that did a fantastic job. It made very little dust, and just sailed through the wall I was repointing. So unelss your mortar is very hard, I'd get the drill bit rather than this.

Good end product but have had two break on me and the cutters don't last long, if they don't also snap....

The product is fantastic. Not easy to attach to a Ryobi angle grinder but got it there in the end. Worked brilliantly but be careful, it's very easy to start cutting into the block. The only other problem I had was the first bit broke after a couple of blocks but the second bit finished the job (approx 30 blocks) for me.

The collars supplied didn't fit either of my TWO 115 mm Grinders. The original too small for one collar and the smallest collar too large for the other ( 38mm). in addition no method of securing the dust guide without drilling and making a fitment !!
Disappointed in it.

I've used the rake for repointing an internal wall on an Edwardian house made of soft London stock bricks and lime mortar.
The rakes themselves work well - you'll have problems if you have uneven brickwork though as this means the rake will not always go deep enough (it would be good if Irwin made different depths of rake bit) similarly you'll still be finishing off corners and edges with an alternate method - I use an SDS drill with a rake on hammer action which works well, but is cumbersome over larger areas, hence the purchase of this item. With internal walls I also wanted to keep debris to a minimum. An angle grinder with a disc rake generally means cut bricks and a wobbly line at some stage - this method is much more controllable.
If you have soft bricks like me then don't try and force it along the joint or you'll end up cutting the brick, it will find it's way with a little gentle pressure. In this respect it's also a good tool as it ensures a standard height mortar line height, even where the brick laying was a little iffy.

My conculsion is that ths product performance average and frustrating to use. The problem lies primarily with the dust extraction and it's a design issue. The the dust collector connecting arm swivels loosely around the plate that attaches to the grinder, naturally this means it drops down with the weigh of the vacuum hose when being used, this would be fine, but the x4 holes in the plate aren't big enough to cope with small stones in the old mortar, so they clog really easily, especially when the heavier dits drop to the bottow where the connector wants to swivel - this means a dust blowing everywhere.
