Product Description

Product Description

The IRWIN carbide tipped mortar rake kit is a power tool accessory for the fast and efficient removal of mortar and cement joints in brickwork repointing applications and for chasing out channels for the installation of cable, pipes and switchboxes.

Supplied with 3 aluminum reduction rings (41mm, 42.5mm and 43mm), meaning that the sole plate fits the most popular angle grinders on the market.

The sole plate ensures consistent clearance depth and is adjustable for variable clearance depths. It is less intrusive to surrounding brickwork and is a good alternative to working with demolition chisels or grinding discs, which can easily cause damage. Please read the instruction manual carefully before using the mortar rake. Only use mortar rakes with adaptor and sole plate.

The IRW10507267 Mortar Rake Starter Kit comes with the following:1 x Sole plate. 2 x 3-cutters (8mm). 1 x Adaptor.3 x Aluminium reduction rings (41mm, 42.5mm and 43mm).

Knowing how to go about repointing an old house with no damp course is an issue. Ours must use lime mortar as it has no damp course. Much incorrect paint and incorrect mortar caused all sorts of damp wall problems, so all the paint has had to be stripped off, the mortar raked out and repointed with lime mortar ready to lime wash so the house can breathe properly. Trial and error has resulted in us using a combination of tools to get the job done effectively. The mortar rake on its own is not the answer. We discovered this after ruining the transfer case on two supposedly heavy duty 950w angle grinders. We also discovered that the diamond mortar bits are far expensive and have way too short a life span to be a viable option. The best answer for us was a combination of fat diamond discs (6mm) for one 4½" angle grinder to cut out the existing mortar to start with, followed by the mortar rake fitted to a second 4½" angle grinder. We use the tungsten tipped 3 and 4 flute bits which are available in a variety of diameters for best results. We find having two separate grinders saves the hassle of swapping fittings. We have also experimented with different Angle grinders and find it is not the power of the angle grinder that counts but the durability of the transfer case. We are currently using two JCB angle grinders that are proving highly reliable whereas other more expensive units failed quite quickly. We couple the mortar rake with a Silverline 1500w 806719 wet and dry vacuum system to extract the removed mortar. This has a power take-off for the angle grinder so that we can start the vacuum from the grinder. This combination works well and allows us to make the most rapid progress. Everything else we have tried is way too slow by comparison.Read more ›

I found the device fitted well on to my B&D grinder, my Dyson tube didn't fit snugly on to the pipe but a bit of insulation tape wrapped around the end of the pipe sorted that and made for a good fit.
I purchased it to rake out two sections of brick work 2 mtrs. sq. where the pointing was in a state. Although my grinder was slightly under the 700w recommended minimum power it worked well, the loser pointed was gone through like a knife through butter but when I got to the solid pointing it got tougher but still went through it ok.
You get 2 cutters in the kit but I only used one for my work as it still seemed to be cutting fine.
I found the dust collecting worked well and I would have no issues with using this in doors.

I have used the vacuum attachment with my ordinary mortar rake so I cannot comment on the fluted rakes.

This was used to rake out a 1930's soft lime mortar joints on an internal wall. the debris was a mix of fine dust and particles variying from pea gravel to small stones. frequently the vacuum attachment need to be rotated to unblock the debris holes. the vacuum was more of a problem though. The fine dust created by the raked blocked the filter quite frequently (Wickes wet and dry vac with paper). this is still preferable to the clouds of dust that would otherwise fill the rooms if the attachment were not used.

Overall I think this a great little product but you need to have a decent vacuum to use with it.

As per the most 'useful' review, the tool is useful but not to be relied upon as the only method for raking out.

The bit will quickly rip through soft mortar, making clouds of dust. But it will still damage some softer brickwork if you are not careful.
Hard mortar will overheat or blunt the bit.
It seems quite costly for what it is.
The bracket fit is sloppy on the grinder.
The dust exhaust is near useless- I cut it off to get it out of the way.

I still used a grinding disc for hard mortar areas.

I would definitely consider the irwin rake kit as a necessary tool for a re pointing job, but don't expect it to do everything!

The cutters worked fine, better than the diamond grit rakes. The extractor part worked fine for about three minutes then everything came loose! Rather dangerous when the cutter is still spinning.I tightened the extractor housing up three times then gave up & used the cutter on its own. The packing rings were a snug fit on my 125mm grinder but the extractor housing is made from heavy guage metal & tightening using simply a phillips screwdriver is not enough. There is not enough allowance in the extractor housing to tighten sufficiently.

Overall this is a good tool, the only slight problem with mine is that the face plate is not welded squarely to the main body so that setting the correct depth takes a bit of thinking about. The actual cutters last much longer than I expected them to and if you've got a diamond disc, you can ( with a bit of care) sharpen them so that their life is doubled or more. You really need an industrial vac or your constantly emptying the bag. A 6mm cutter would be good if your walls are like mine where no two joints are the same size.

No complaints with this. arrived on time. Does the job very well with my Bosch 4.5 inch grinder. Saw some of the reviews complaining about vacuum attachment getting in the way - I didn't have the same problem. The main unit is comprised of 2 parts, the 1st attaches directly to the grinder, the second with the plate and vacuum assembly is then attached to this - so you can obtain the cutting depth required. The vacuum tube spins freely when in use so doesn't get in the way (for me at least).
