I have suffered sleepless nights, discomfort and pain for the past 11 years, as a result of stomach problems.Being privately insured I have seen consultants and surgeons for all those years. They have carried out every test known to man, endoscopy, colonoscopy, tubes up my nose and into my stomach, recording results etc. All that they have been able to tell me is, "What is not wrong". Operation wise they have removed my gall bladder, performed an endocinch, and most recently (NOV 2008)carried out a "Nissen Fundoplication". If I am totally truthful none of the above has helped, except making the wallets of consultants and surgeons, fatter. In desperation, with no prompting from the medical profession, I thought I would look into IBS. I saw this book by Prof Hunter, and thought i'd give it a go. After reading the initial chapters and assessing my score, I needed to go on the exclusion diet for 2 weeks, quiet difficult but extremely worthwhile. I am now re introducing foods one at a time as detailed, and monitoring the effect, the results have been surprising and somewhat startling. I am getting to sleep with no problems, my discomfort has gone, and I am looking forward to a new lease of life. So far I have discovered that both YEAST and Pilau Rice, cause me sleepless nights, today I test beef and monitor the reaction, with about 8 other foodstuffs to test. For me this book so far has been a revalation, given me hope, and worth every penny.

This interesting book by Professor Hunter really does explain the causes of IBS and actually understands what we sufferers go through. When GP's can only tell us what we have not got eg. cancer, but cannot offer any help or explanation as to our symptoms, this clearly explains and helps. I have a combination of the two causes and now after trialling a diet can say I have my IBS fully under control after over 16 years!! How fab is that!!! I would recommend this book to patients AND TO DOCTORS so they can better advise their patients.
A GOOD INFORMATIVE BOOK WHICH KNOCKS ALL THE OTHERS ON THE MARKET INTO A COCKED HAD (believe me I have read them!)

I really enjoyed this book as it really helped me to identify the type of IBS that I had and my triggers. I was struggling before and could never figure out what the problem was. I was eating a high fibre diet that was pretty healthy and I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong as you always hear that you should have a high fibre diet for your heart etc. After reading this book I was able to identify the types of fibre I can digest and the ones that cause me trouble, it also helped to highlight that what might work for one person might not work for another. This book for me was amazing and has really helped to sort me out. My sister has IBS and I have passed it onto her so that she can get the help that this book provided for me.

An excellent book which is easy to read and use. There are no fancy long medical terms just straightforward language.
The questionnaires helped me identify what was the root cause of my problem and gave me a huge helping hand to solving it.
From the heart of bottom I thank Professor John Hunter - my life is so much easier.

I've seen my gp a couple of times a speacialist bowell consultant on my private helath policy and was in treatment with a hyponotherpaist.

Compare to this book they've all been a waste of money - you can read this book in a day - self diagnose the type of ibs you have (essentially it seems like there are 4 types) most so called health professionals that ive spoken to seem to group ibs in 1 big bucket)

It offers really practical ways to identify and test which type you are - and then offers some really simple steps to sort things out - if you have IBS you should definitel;y read this book

A very well written book addressed to those people coping with IBS. It is written in a very simple, easy to understand language and gives numerous examples and explanations as to why some things might work for some people and why it doesn't for other people. To make you understand what type of IBS you have, it has a questionnaire at the beginning of the book guiding you as whether this might be your problem and the steps you need to take. The author has done a lot of research and treated a lot of people with IBS trying to find an explanation each time something helped or it stopped working. It offers an insight into a wide range of IBS symptoms and possible treatments/solutions. This is an excellent book for someone who had IBS for many years and tried to cope with it.

I came to this book somewhat in despair. I had gone through all the tests - colonoscopy, endoscopy, etc - and my gastroenterologist said I had IBS. He said he didn't know what was causing it, that I had a "disease" I would "have to learn live with" and advised taking some drugs that "might help" (they didn't).

Learn to live with it? I was missing large amounts of time off work, couldn't go out and my life was fairly miserable. Not only because I was spending hours on the toilet and was in pain, but also because people tend to think its "all in your head" or not a serious problem just because the doctor can't see anything on one of his tests. That's not your fault, it's simply a reflection of the inadequacy of the tests that are currently available!

However, this book changed everything. Prof Hunter sets out clearly that there are four major types of IBS, that you CAN determine the cause of your IBS, and best of all, fix it in the vast majority of cases. This is based on clinical studies and hard science which is reassuring. It is certainly not "alternative medicine," I would say more "cutting edge" research.

One such piece of clinical evidence Prof Hunter cites in the book that was highly relevant to me: if you have had food poisoning you are about 10 times more likely to suffer from IBS! Well this was a big revelation for me: my problems started directly after two quite severe bouts of food poisoning. My previous gastroenterologist had said they had nothing to do with my problems, despite the fact that I had never had any bowel problems before that!

Anyway, the book requires you to monitor your symptoms and score things on a system that should enable you to determine which type of IBS you have. Then there are solutions to follow.
