I'm a long term Juliet fan, I've been buying her books on the day of release for more than a decade and I've never been dissapointed by her stories. Then I started Irons in the Fire and I wondered what had gone wrong. The first chapters dragged and I didn't care much about any of the new characters. The only thing that kept me reading was the hope that Livac and Halice would pop out of a bucket and get the book back on track.
Somehow though the book drew me in; a few hours into reading I noticed that I had started to carry it around the house with me, reading while I made tea and chosing to read rather than answer the phone. By the time I finished it at 4am I was back in awe of Juliete McKenna's skill at world and character builiding and truly greatful that she has continued to think about her work and keeps taking her books in different directions, rather than churning out re-hashes of old themes.
