Product Description

Product Description

The ideal secure flash drive for individuals who want to protect the data they care about most.
All data stored on an IronKey Personal drive is encrypted with high-speed military-grade hardware encryption. Unlike software-based encryption, this "always-on" protection cannot be disabled and is protected against cold-boot and brute force attacks. No one can access files stored on an IronKey unless they authenticate with the correct password. All encryption and password verification are performed in hardware, and it cannot be disabled by worms, viruses or other malware.
IronKey Personal S250 drives use premium quality dual-channel flash memory to give you fast file read performance of up to 31MB/second and write speeds of up to 18MB/second. High-quality SLC memory also means your drive will last years longer than drives equipped with traditional flash memory.
Shielded in a solid, tamper-resistant and waterproof metal casing that surrounds specially sealed internal components, IronKey drives are built to survive years of wear and tear.
Each IronKey drive is pre-configured with a client-side secure digital certificate, which can be used for strong authentication (VeriSign Identity Protection service) to participating websites. IronKey also provides a PKCS #11 interface which will allow any Windows application to potentially use the certificate.

Presentation is above average, the finish feels quality and is a whole league above a standard memory stick, with a good "weight" behind it and a very solid feel, with no seams or obvious ways into it. The metal is around 2mm thick and does not dent easily.

Initial insertion: A new removable disk and a CD drive called Ironkey unlocker both appear under "my computer". Open the CD and click ironkey.exe, then the install process begins. Setup was quick and painless, just setting up a password and an online password (see note 1 below). Once done, the other removable disk becomes "Imation USB" and behaves like any other usb pen drive and it works fine in Windows 8. Transfer rates are very good - write was measured at around 22MB/s and read about 33MB/s for larger files. That's a very fast write speed and a well above average read speed. Overall I felt the stick performs very seamlessly, with only a very minor hassle overhead regarding the security.

Perhaps the stick takes security to one more level than it needs to be for the average user even in business, but if you're dead set on nobody ever having a chance of getting to your files, then this is the stick for you.

I felt that some more clarity could be offered than the product details give, so here's some more information about the functionality:

1 - On install, you are given an option of binding the stick to an online account, this will enable you to unlock it if you lose the password. This is done by setting a secret question/answer.

I tried to open the `quick start guide' in the Documents>Personal folder that is on the memory stick by default but strangely got the error message `There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired'. Not a great start for getting going quickly. The general User Guide did work however and gave clear instructions on how to initially set up secure connection with the Iron Key.

Double click on the executable file (*.exe) file under either Windows or Mac folder depending upon what your computer type is and a secure connection is set up with the memory stick. Then you're asked to confirm if the language is the same as the computer that you are on and you then enter a password to use (which you enter twice to confirm). Then it asks for an email for an online account and a box to `enable password reset'. An email is then sent and you need to go to your email and click on the link to confirm a link with this email address. You are then asked for a security question and once you select this as well as the answer you go back to the Iron Key software (Imation) and it completes set up.

Now everytime you plug the memory stick in you need to run the executable file to unlock and view information that you have securely put on the device. Oddly a separate folder assignment pops up under `My Computer' to access your secured information.
I'll explain what I mean. So on my PC I inserted the memory stick and this came up as `Drive F Iron Key Unlocker'. After running the Imation Iron Key executable file and entered my password, another drive letter appeared `Secure Files (G:).

The memory stick itself is about 7.5 cm in length and has a brushed chrome look and seems extremely durable and well made.

    4.0 out of 5 stars IronKey 25 Sep 2013

A 4Gb USB memory stick but quite unlike any I have previously encountered. The IronKey is designed to keep your data safe and I mean safe! Considerably larger than a standard USB stick the IronKey is clad in brushed stainless steel, is said to waterproof with the internals embedded in black epoxy and if intrusion into the casing is attempted the manufacturers claim the unit will self-destruct. I haven't tested this claim!

On inserting the IronKey you are prompted to enter a password of your choice followed by your e-mail address. You then have to wait until you receive an e-mail and then follow the instructions it gives to proceed. The set-up procedure involves copying you default browser to the device which will later allow for secure browsing.

After set-up is complete inserting the stick causes the IronKey programme to run which initially prompts for your password. Again the manufacturers claim that 10 wrong attempts will cause the unit to self-destruct and again I haven't tested this out!

Once the password has been accepted you can copy files to and from the stick just as with any other memory device. In 'My Computer' the unit shows up as 2 devices, in my case drive D: IronKey and drive E: folder. The folder option is used to transfer data.

Just a couple of more things, the IronKey software allows you you make encrypted copies of your data to your PC and before trying to eject the device you should select the 'Lock' option on the IronKey control panel to ensure correct ejection.

An excellent device for storing important information such as passwords, personal details etc. securely but seemingly expensive. I was fortunate enough to test the unit out as part of Amazon's Vine programme. Whether I would actually purchase one I don't know.
