Product Description

IronKey Personal is a revolutionary personal security device designed to protect your data, passwords and online identity on any computer.
All data stored on an IronKey Personal drive is encrypted with high-speed military-grade hardware encryption. Unlike software-based encryption, this "always-on" protection cannot be disabled and is protected against cold-boot and brute force attacks. No one can access files stored on an IronKey unless they authenticate with the correct password. All encryption and password verification are performed in hardware, and it cannot be disabled by worms, viruses or other malware.
D250 drives balance performance and value for users who don’t require constant access to data. The same great security as the S250, the D250 has dual-channel MLC flash memory for reliable read/write performance.
Shielded in a solid, tamper-resistant and waterproof metal casing that surrounds specially sealed internal components, IronKey drives are built to survive years of wear and tear.
Each IronKey drive is pre-configured with a client-side secure digital certificate, which can be used for strong authentication (VeriSign Identity Protection service) to participating websites. IronKey also provides a PKCS #11 interface which will allow any Windows application to potentially use the certificate.

Take your personal information with you everywhere, safely and securely. Protect your critical data with the IronKey Cryptochip that keeps encryption management on the device and enforces an authorized password to unlock data and applications on the encrypted flash drive. The IronKey Personal drives are FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated with AES 256-bit hardware encryption, the strongest available to protect your sensitive data while meeting regulatory requirements. With up to 64GB of storage on the Imation D250 drive, there’s plenty of room to store and safely use portable applications so you can do what you want, when you want. Self-defending IronKey Personal drives provide active protections against the spread of worms, malware and other malicious code. The device will permanently self-destruct after 10 consecutive incorrect password attempts, and a ruggedized, waterproof metal chassis resists physical break-ins and is tamper evident. IronKey Personal D250 drives balance performance and value for users with average data access needs. Same great security as the S250, with dual-channel MLC flash memory for reliable read/write performance.

This is not a moan more a bit of information if your considering buying one, Although it is a 2GB Key, when it is set up & running the space you have is actually 1.38 GB out of 1.48GB. due to the pre loaded software.

It is a bit of a hit in terms of storage but it is still a really worthwhile product for the safe storage of your passwords.

I was slightly surprised at how big this USB drive was. It is significantly bigger and heavier than most other USB drives currently on the market, sizing in just longer than a credit card. It has a simple, strong metal construction which certainly implies that it will live up to expectations, although I haven't actually tested out the physical strength too thoroughly.

It is incredibly simple to set-up, although when syncing for the first time on Windows 7, it too some time before it was actually ready to use. Setting up the password is a simply process and allows the user to password protect content with wrong password entry resulting in either destruction of the device (I'm yet to find out whether this is just internal or a mission impossible mini explosion), or a simple wipe of the data.

I think for information that needs to remain incredibly secure this might be a worthwhile investment, but given the significant cost, and the potential to protect other memory devices, I can't really recommend it for the average user. Although it may be useful for business or national secrets.

At first glance, these USB drives may seem extremely-expensive. What you're paying for though is serious security.

Strictly speaking, nothing can ever be 100% secure. There's always an exploit or way of getting around things. However, that mainly applies to software-based security and that, for obvious reasons, is almost always cheaper.

    Enter the IronKey.
IronKey is hardware-based encryption, meaning you'd need physical access to the drive. Even then, a brute-force (that is, running a list of all possible combinations at the system until the combination that comprises the password is found) attack is highly-unlikely to work and this is the beauty of this device: enter the password incorrectly too many times (in this case 10) and one of two things will happen; either the device self-destructs (rendering the hardware where the data is stored useless) or it's reset to factory settings, meaning all data is erased. Which of the two options happen is set by the owner at setup. Choose wisely.

If you really care about data being protected, the above feature will likely sell you on this alone, but there's more.
It's possible to have the drive lock itself if you're inactive for a set period of time (5 to 15 minutes) as well as use an onscreen keyboard instead of your own physical keyboard, if the possibility of keystroke-logging software worries you.

The features on this device are over-the-top (as is the price) for the average user. If, however, in a world of NSA-snooping you're worried about your truly-sensitive data, this should be right up your alley.

This USB stick is certainly solid and robust, though a little bigger than I first expected. Set up and use is a doddle, and I feel that should it ever get lost or stolen that I would be safe in the knowledge that all the information on it would be properly protected, which is its main purpose.
Of course, if you aren't in the habit of carrying government secrets about your person, then this is all a little excessive given its high price tag, however if security is of prime importance to yourself then this is the bees knees!

I know people who use these USB sticks because their job involves carrying very sensitive information - and I can see why these are the preferred models used.

I was concerned to start with that having an encrypted stick would make accessing and adding files a bit of a chore, but thankfully it is pretty simple. Once you've created the password all you need to worry about is remembering it, otherwise you run the risk of losing your data (enter it incorrectly 10 times and the stick will wipe itself). Security isn't just about software though and the hardware itself is impressive, it feels very rugged and the "tube" which allows you to clip this to a key-ring is very secure and won't come loose.

So if you want a secure memory stick then this is excellent - but performance is disappointingly average and capacity is clearly quite low - you would only purchase this is you *really* needed the security features when for a tenth of the price you can get a memory stick of twice the capacity.

In a nutshell: This is an average performing memory stick with a low capacity, for general use this isn't a natural choice but it occupies a niche which some will find essential.

Does what it says on the tin, no issues on Mac OS X 10.6.8, files copy over nicely no speed hit I could see!

But to use this product for the only copy or without a decent backup routine would be plain daft!

I've had my unfair share of hard drives and computer failures - yes Apple computers fail!

But if data security is important to you, this is as good as it gets!

    excellent!
