DVD Description

Iron Road is the epic adventure of Little Tiger (Sun Li), a poor Chinese boy who yearns to make his fortune building the railroad through the Rocky Mountains, the very same place where his father mysteriously disappeared years before. The railroad tycoon, Alfred Nichol (Sam Neill) is facing bankruptcy and dispatches his playboy son James (Luke MacFarlane) to China to recruit workers at rock-bottom wages. There, James meets the dissolute local recruiter (Peter O'Toole) and Little Tiger, who saves his life in a fight with a vicious gang lord. In return, James hires the kid. In the railway camp, Little Tiger battles prejudice, treachery and a surging attraction to James, so powerful it unlocks his dark secret--that 'he' is actually a beautiful young woman who has disguised herself to survive in a man's world. Now everything is at stake--her life, her love for James, and her quest for the truth about her father.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Moving, Watch It, 18 Aug 2009

I bought this DVD because Peter O'Toole is in the movie. As always he does nothing less than burn his performance into your memory. However, his role isn't enormous but the movie swept me up completely anyway. The central performance from Sun Li is stunning. She plays a girl pretending to be a boy in order to survive her harsh surroundings. The character has so many facets - at times heartbreakingly romantic, but she is also incredibly tough. to You would think that the 'girl pretending to be a boy' thing had been done to death, but this movie does so much with the form. The music is beautiful and certainly adds to the poignancy of the picture. The movie is in 2 parts, each about 90 minutes long. Not a boring moment. The cinematography is outstanding. I thoroughly recommend this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars forbidden love, 16 May 2010
This review is from: Iron Road [DVD] (DVD)
I was very impressed by this series. I had never heard of it before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is very moving but quite amusing at times. There is excitement and thrills as the chinese immigrants work tirelessly for the Railroad. Sam Neill plays the tycoon building the rail line in Canada and as you can imagine being Canada, the scenery is magnificent. The tycoon's son played by Luke McFarlane, and the young chinese girl played by Betty Sun, fall in love but they have to keep it secret and the story becomes quite an epic as she tries to find out about her father who disappeared years before. I am sure anyone who buys this DVD will not be disappointed. I highly recommend it.
