Amazon.co.uk Review

The return of Tony Stark, in the guise of Robert Downey Jr, in Iron Man 2 proves to be a welcome one. For Downey Jr utterly owns the dual role of Stark and Iron Man, and in this entertaining superhero sequel, he’s given a tricky nemesis to fight.

The foe is Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko, introduced properly in a staggering action sequence set at Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. Director Jon Favreau stages this superbly, and Iron Man 2 manages to pack plenty into its opening 40 minutes as a result.

The foot does go off the gas, though, in the middle part of the film, when Iron Man 2 does get bogged down by a few too many characters and plot points. But there’s regularly something to keep the attention up, before all bets are off for the entertaining finale.

Iron Man 2 may not be a perfect sequel, but it’s certainly a good one. And it’s a thorough and rigorous home cinema workout, too. Boasting spectacular visuals and a thunderous surround sound mix, the Blu-ray edition of the film is a thrilling ride, and the best way to enjoy an already-worthwhile movie. --Jon Foster

By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Having revealed to the world that he is Iron Man, Tony Stark is revelling in his status as a superhero an is living his life as only a playboy billionaire can. Not everything is great however, as not only it the US government continually trying to get him to give them access to his technology but he is also being poisoned by the very thing that is keeping him alive. Complicating matters further is the Russian physicist Ivan Vanko who is looking for revenge against Stark for what his father did to Vanko's family.

This second `Iron Man' movie is a little hard for me to pin down. A lot of the time there are individual scenes in the movie that are better than anything the first film could offer but for some reason the whole thing never seems to gel together as well as it should. Part of the problem may that with Stark slowly dying, Vanko's revenge plot and the military trying to get their hands on the Stark's tech, it may be that the film has too many plot strands going on at one time.

The special effects for the film are just as good, if not better than those of the previous film and the soundtrack is also very good. The script could have probably done with a little work but this is more than made up for by the great action sequences. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are both just as good as in the first film and Mickey Rourke is great a Ivan Vanko. Samuel L. Jackson is also brilliant as Nick Fury.

Overall, while this film isn't as good as its predecessor, or some of the other more recent Marvel films, it is still greatly entertaining and well worth four stars.

This film review could go one of 2 ways. i could absolutely slate it as they are cashing in on the fact that the first film was very good. Or i could give it the respect it deserves for its entertainment factor. I'm going to just say, if you enjoyed the first film for its action, witty one liners and great visuals then you shouldnt be disappointed at all with the sequel. In blu ray you truly get to see ALL of the detail of the iron man suits. Any action film addicts should most definitely buy this film!

Ok, so the movie is great, but I'm really disappointed with the lack of extra features in this. For example, on the Iron Man Double Disk Edition, we got over four hours of extra features and behind the scenes stuff, and that wasn't even including the deleted scenes. On this? Three deleted scenes and a fifteen minute behind the scenes feature. And when we compare it to the Blu-Ray release, it simply doesn't match up. I can see the marketing and financial idea behind it, getting people to buy the more expensive version to see the extras, but come on, it's not exactly fair is it? Some of us don't see the benefits of Blu-Ray, why should we have to splurge on not only that release, but also the tech to play it on? I wasn't expecting the same amount of extra awesomeness we got with the first movie, but come on, this was just poor.

Here's hoping for a few more goodies on IM3.

Iron Man (1) excellent. Iron Man 2 doesn't take itself seriously so why waste your time when there are many other choices? Special effects don't save it, story line naff. Read more
