Tony Stark, an inventor and a playboy, is the CEO of Stark Industries which produces advance weapon systems for the U.S. military. H e's captured by terrorists in Afghanistan after demonstrating a new weapon and forced to create WMDs. While on captivity, he creates a powerful armored suit and manages to escape. Returning to America, Tony builds a better suit of armor which gives him superhuman strength and the ability to fly. With the help of his personal assistant Pepper Potts and Air Force Lieut. Colonel Jim Rhodes, Tony vows to protect the world as Iron Man. Based on the Marvel comic book character Iron Man.
Iron Man, outside of comic-book circles, was never one of the better-known superheroes waiting to enjoy a big screen adventure, but in the aftermath of Jon Favreau’s superb movie, anticipation for 2010’s Iron Man 2 is rightly sky-high.
Fortunately, there’s the small matter of the excellent Blu-ray release of the first film to enjoy while the wait goes on, which offers reference-quality picture and audio to enjoy. And those combine to bring across one of the most downright-enjoyable superhero movies of recent times. Robert Downey Jr is an inspired casting choice as Tony Stark, whose genesis as Iron Man is covered by this first film. Generous with its humour and yet never afraid to throw a spectacular action sequence at the screen, there’s nonetheless real grown-up thinking sitting underneath Iron Man, and the film benefits enormously from it.
Most Blu-ray recommendations inevitably promote the 1080p picture quality of a movie as one of its major selling points. That’s certainly fair here. But also, the audio work on the Iron Man disc is superb. This is a full surround sound track in every sense, with the soundstage ramping up the noise and the intensity as the action takes hold, but also proving its quality in the film’s slower moments too. Backed up with extra features in high-definition too, it’s a rounded and very welcome Blu-ray release. --Jon Foster

Iron Man is an amazing film. I almost feel like I could stop this review there. The story is obviously an Origin tale of how weapon industrialist playboy genius billionaire Tony Stark becomes Iron Man. During a weapons demonstration Tony gets kidnapped by terrorists who want him to build weapons of their own, instead Tony builds his first suit of armour to escape which sets him on a path realising his weapons haven't been just protecting America as he thought, and how he can right the wrongs using his newly developed armour.
The plot may not sound interesting from what I wrote but the acting, wit and charm of the film is really something else. Robert Downey Jr steals the show as Stark, this is a role he was born to play, he couldn't be any more perfect for it if he tried though the rest of the cast also put in great and often funny performances.
To tie it all off the film looks and sounds fantastic. The special effects are so good I can't tell what's a real suit and what's computer generated and because of the making of extras I know which are which and it doesn't help. In HD the film looks stunning and the soundtrack kicks ass to boot. (Driving with the top down is my favorite song)
The blu-Ray extra features are surprisingly extensive. There is an origins interview with the comic creator Stan Lee as well as other writers and artists involved in his creation.Read more ›
It is the first part of the film that is truly awesome. Downey Jnr's own decadent lifestyle plays so well into the character of Stark and the arrogance that accompanies a genious who knows his position is delicious. His winning way with people and the awe with which the squaddies look up to him in the moment before his convoy is hit are moments of cinematic greatness.
The part of the film where robots are fighting each other is less fun. I'm not a fan of the Transformers film and I didn't like the same robot action here. The process that turns Stark into the Iron Man both in the cave and then when perfecting the suit in California are what makes this film work so excellently.
There are plot holes just as there are in any blockbuster. The sentimentality of the reporting on a refugee crisis is cringeworthy. The deliberate attempt to de-Arabise the terrorist group is pointless as those who fail to see the difference still won't while those who do will not be convinced. Despite all that this is still a great film.Read more ›
one of the best comic book adaptations out there and a film that those who've never read the source material can enjoy. because this is a film which tries to be as realistic as possible in it's style and setting. and it's also a movie first and foremost about character. dominated by a superb leading performance from robert downey jr as tony stark, who comes over as the kind of individual you could but daydream about being. ably supported by gwyneth paltrow as his secretary virginia 'pepper' potts, the two have a fascinating relationship, always on the edge of making their professional lives into personal ones, and always never quite admitting how much they depend on each other.
this is the origin story for the character, and the villainy that he has to deal with does seem a bit tacked on, but that's a minor complaint. a strong character drama and a satisfying blockbuster and a hugely entertaining fllm as a result.
the dvd more than does it justice. this is the two disc edition, and it comes in a strong steel box.Read more ›
