3.0 out of 5 stars A too short reminder of interesting times 13 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is advertised as a brief outline of the Thatcher years and that is just what it is. However, it is just a little too brief to really deliver. It brought back a lot of memories of the 80s and the Iron Lady's total domination of the period.

Inevitably in a book this short which covers so much there, is little insight just a straightforward telling of the facts. As soon as you read about one key period, for example the Falklands' War, you are onto the next, the Miners' Strike. The author is very honest about this and there is an excellent bibliography of the period. However, if you are really interested in learning about the Thatcher years you are probably better off just going straight into one of these books and reading a full analysis of her governments.

I read it in a day and have my own views on most of the period. I would have liked to have been more challenged. Love her or hate her, Margaret Thatcher is one of the great characters in history and it takes more than 161 pages to do her justice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative but too brief 27 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed reading this book. It is an interesting, informative and accessible introduction to Margaret Thatcher's premiership. The authors succeed by and large in illustrating the nature of 'Thatcherist' ideology and how her administration marked the departure from social democratic state collectivism, which had been the foundation of British politics since 1945. However in common with my fellow reviewer I agree it is too brief. The authors tend to jump quite abruptly between the major issues; between the Falklands War and the Miners Strike for instance. This can make it difficult for a reader to identify links and compile an overall understanding. Furthermore I noticed that the authors failed to acknowledge that support for the Thatcher Government what geographically skewed across the United Kingdom. In Scotland for example this was a huge issue as the Scots rejected Thatcherism electorally and the fact that her government kept being returned to power raised critical questions about Scotland's position in the UK, I've heard it said on many occasions that it was Thatcher who paved the way for devolution in 1999. Although I wasn't expecting lots of information on this issue, the fact that it wasn't even mentioned was disappointing. I would recommend this as a starting point for those wanting to know more, however for those who already have an understanding of the basics, I too recommend that they seek out a more in depth and detailed account.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little book of Thatcher 15 Mar. 2015
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER
This small hardback gives a brief summary of the life and times of Margaret Thatcher from childhood to her life after Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Digested into easy-to-read chapters, the book contains lots of quotes from Thatcher herself and those who knew her. Indeed, the final chapter focuses entirely on her most famous quotations.

There are far more extensive books out there about Margaret Thatcher, but if your looking for a short, none-to-wordy but nevertheless informative overview of her life and period in government, this is a good one to have. 'Iron lady - The Thatcher Years' is ideal for younger readers or political students to pick out and discover quick facts about her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read 30 Dec. 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This short book gives a high level objective view of Margaret Thatchers time in power.

A great start to familiarize yourself with the political dynamics during this time. Perhaps a book for the younger generation, 1980's up
