Before he went to Pixar to do THE INCREDIBLES (2004), Brad Bird co-wrote and directed one of the best animated films of the 1990's - THE IRON GIANT (1999). But sadly, this wonderful film was a failure at the box-office. Why? Because Warner Bros. gave the film no marketing (no TV spots and very few ads in newspapers and magazines). But the film critics loved it and it has fared much better on VHS & DVD sales. And hopefully, thanks to the success of THE INCREDIBLES, more people will watch THE IRON GIANT.
This film is a big step from the 2-D animated Disney films of the late-1990's. There's no romantic sub-plots, no talking creatures voiced by a-list celebrities and best of all, no cring-worthy songs that tries to become an Oscar contender. THE IRON GIANT is a touching and heartwarming film about a lonely boy who befriends a giant iron robot from outer space.
If you've read this review, please buy THE IRON GIANT on DVD and watch it with all of your family. It's a modern classic.
