Amazon.co.uk Review
Iron Eagles (short of Top Gun) is close to being the definitive boys' movie of the 1980s. An 18-year-old (Jason Gedrick) gets instruction from an old vet (Louis Gossett Jr) in how to fly an F-16 jet and kick butt in the Middle East, all while listening to his Walkman and--oh, yeah--saving his father from terrorist clutches. Gossett wears his tough-love face while the kids run rampant. Speaking of children, young guys must have like this comic-book movie, as its success spawned three sequels. But watch out for the Reagan-era jingoism and political reductiveness. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Empty DVD but a great movie!, 11 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Iron Eagle [DVD] [1986] (DVD)
O.k so it's a rubbish DVD. O.k so the film is devoyedof all logical reason. But it's great! An hour and a half of top action, great aerial sequences which makes top gun look like amateur footage and the quest every teenage boy dreams. To 'borrow' an F-16 Fighter, take on the entire Middle East and rescue your Dad from certain death. Add to that a top notch soundtrack which will have you tapping your foot along all the way and you've got my favourite film of all time. 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the most realistic tale but a superb action adventure, 15 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Iron Eagle [VHS] [1986] (VHS Tape)
Whilst Iron Eagle may not be the most realistic of films, it certainly keeps the audience interested. Often tagged as a top gun rip off it was actually released about a year before the Tony Cooke blockbuster. Some great aerial footage and a superb soundtrack make this one of my favourite films.

1.0 out of 5 stars Iron turkey, 20 Sep 2007
By wilco121 (A long time ago, In a galaxy far, far away) - See all my reviews
I find it interesting how seamlessly the mantle of worst film I ever seen gets so fluidly passed from one film to another. A 'friend' (the following recommendation means I may well have to review the friendship!) recommended this film as 1986's US air force equivalent to Top Gun. This 'friend' claimed it were better than the classic Tom Cruise cheesefest. Now, I recognise Top Gun as what it is. No means the best film, best acted, best storyline... best anything. But it is a great classic. As I am interested in all aspects of military portrayal, I thought this would be an amazing & interesting comparison.

My god how wrong could I be?!? Lets study the differences.

Top gun is a cult classic film. Showing young men (butch, studly & buffed of course) in a exciting flying action flick.
Iron Eagle is a limp, wannabe making a mockery of any air force. It also perpetrates a 14 year old flying an F16, not to mention his pre-pubescent friends hacking into a military defence net using charm, distraction and cunning, to requisition 2 multi million dollar, armed to the teeth F16's so that fly boy can rescue his old man with the help of a washed out veteran. Did I mention fly boy has only flown master system graphic simulators before.
Top Gun has a kick ass soundtrack merged nicely into the background. Ok so there is the odd naff song in there. Can't be all perfect though
Iron Eagle has some 1 or 2 ok songs, but all too often 80's cheese rock which doesn't sit well in an action film. More embarrassingly though, the music choice also acts as a plot function (i.e. he can only fly well to rock music) uuuhhh.
Top Gun has a faceless, menacing enemy.
Iron Eagle has David Souchet aka Hercules Poiret! Please don't get into that plane and fly! Please don't! Oh my god he just has...
Top Gun remained an iconic one of a kind hit.
Iron Eagle for some unknown reason decides to make a franchise. 4 films! And you are all familiar with the term jump the shark? Well this franchise jumped the shark about 3 years before it should have been released. It really is that bad.
Top Gun launched or at least benefited several careers ; Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Michael Ironside...
Iron Eagle ruined a career of Louis Gossett Jr - 'Chappie' in the film. Following a genuinely menacing presence in Office & Gentleman, he has been stripped to a lousy supporting role, playing second fiddle to a whiney know it all kid. Even taking the lead role in the sequels couldn't restore his status.
Top Gun was very homo erotic
Iron eagle was not... hang on, Iron Eagle was even more homo erotic - even to the extent of Chappy & Fly Boy discussing tactics whilst Chappy was in the shower! "you see boy, this soap here is your plane and the target is..."

Here's an interesting fact: The US air force were originally to be advisors for this film, however when they found out that kids hacking into their security systems with ease was an integral part of the plot, they denied all involvement of the film. I can't blame them. I hereby do the same! Iron Eagle? What's that... I haven't watched it for sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Iron Eagle
The Original and best as many of its flying sequences were used in some of the sequals and many other movies with air combat sequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars corny but fun to watch
Iron Eagle was easier to digest for me which should not mean its better than top gun as both films have pride of place in my dvd collection of best a and b sides. Read more
