Amazon.co.uk Review

Iron Man, outside of comic-book circles, was never one of the better-known superheroes waiting to enjoy a big screen adventure, but in the aftermath of Jon Favreau’s superb movie, anticipation for 2010’s Iron Man 2 is rightly sky-high.

Fortunately, there’s the small matter of the excellent Blu-ray release of the first film to enjoy while the wait goes on, which offers reference-quality picture and audio to enjoy. And those combine to bring across one of the most downright-enjoyable superhero movies of recent times. Robert Downey Jr is an inspired casting choice as Tony Stark, whose genesis as Iron Man is covered by this first film. Generous with its humour and yet never afraid to throw a spectacular action sequence at the screen, there’s nonetheless real grown-up thinking sitting underneath Iron Man, and the film benefits enormously from it.

Most Blu-ray recommendations inevitably promote the 1080p picture quality of a movie as one of its major selling points. That’s certainly fair here. But also, the audio work on the Iron Man disc is superb. This is a full surround sound track in every sense, with the soundstage ramping up the noise and the intensity as the action takes hold, but also proving its quality in the film’s slower moments too. Backed up with extra features in high-definition too, it’s a rounded and very welcome Blu-ray release. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars Ironman a definite winner, 20 May 2010

I saw the movie, bought it on DVD and now moved to blu ray which has really enhanced the visual and sound entertainment. It depends on your taste, but Ironman is a great movie that provides a good storyline into the creation of the Iron Man concept, which has not been lost in Iron Man 2. If you are into action, sci-fi, fantasy and superheroes this is a quality movie of just over 2 hours that keeps you enthralled and entertained.

3.0 out of 5 stars "I'm going to protect the people I put in danger...", 28 Jan 2009

This review is from: Iron Man [DVD] (DVD)
When weapons-wizard and playboy Tony Stark is kidnapped by a middle-Eastern terrorist group, he has an epiphany and realises that the millions he has in the bank are there because of a lot of human deaths and suffering. His escape in a metal suit of armour leads to further development of the idea and an icon is born...

This is a pretty typical superhero film and follows a well established formula - but the added bit of romance and the performance given by Robert Downey Jr makes it more than just watchable.

The special effects are excellent, as you'd expect - and though there's plenty of CGI, it's rarely too obvious. It was good to see the development of the final 'suit' rather than simply getting a finished article - there was a feeling that something special was building up.

There were many aspects to the film though that seemed a bit too convenient. A massively complex piece of technology seemed a bit too easy to design and build, and the power unit from one seamlessly fitted into another and worked fine. I suppose I should suspend belief at this - maybe it's just because I make my living as a software tester and I'm jealous that they could get systems build in incredibly short timeframes and work flawlessly with other independent systems!

In a nutshell: I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could, but I can't. If Robert Downey Jr and Jeff Bridges hadn't been in it then I may well be considering 2 stars - but they were in it and they were fantastic. I still can't help but think that the film copped out a bit and it seemed as though anyone could knock up a iron man suit and learn how to use it in the same length of time it took me to assemble my shed. There seemed to be a great message about the weapons trade and how human deaths can be a commercial commodity - in short, the film had something to say, but it seemed to stop mid sentence. It wasn't a poor film, and I'm looking forward to the next instalment. This could be a great film franchise if it's done right, this introduction didn't have me on the edge of my seat - but it has wetted my appetite for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Weapon Is The One You Never Have To Fire..., 26 Oct 2008
It's been a while since Robert Downey Jr. made anything worth watching, and here he makes a return to the big screen. Downey Jr. plays brilliant industrialist and hi-tech billionaire inventor Tony Stark who travels to war-torn Afghanistan to demonstrate his latest weapon 'Jericho'. Stark and his entourage are then ambushed by the most devestating of means. Stark finds himself at the mercy of Middle Eastern terrorists and a power crazed self-appointed extremist general, no doubt, hellbent on bringing America and her allies to their knees. Stark is ordered to build the very weapon he created to protect America and her interests. He uses his 3 months incarceration to build himself a get out clause - a powered exoskeleton - although a little rustic in appearance at first, we watch as the billionaire turned vigillante unleashes his wrath upon his captors, in the most astonishing way.

Director Jon Favreau treats us to a visual tour-de-force with startling imagery of a high tech billionaire's dream and a plethora of playboy vices such as fast cars, exotic hillside mansions, fantastic gadgetry and the obligatory love interest Miss Pepper Potts, wonderfully portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow. She plays Tony Stark's trusted assistant and potential girlfriend who together with Stark face the maniacle and twisted Stark Industries executive Obadiah Stane (the outstanding Jeff Bridges).

Marvel put the project in production as their first self-financed film. The result is an outstanding sequence of events and astonishingly detailed account of the birth of the technologically advanced superhero, Iron Man. This is one of the best, if not THE best of the superhero movies that have somewhat tarnished the movie world, only this time we have a film worth its weight in Stark Industries steel. The heart thumping score, futuristic CGI visuals and comic book fantasy world have forged the making of a legend in a spectacular way.
