In 1967 Green recorded this fine album "Iron City!" which seemed to suggest that the guitarist was set to rise to the top but his career was derailed by drug addiction and such players as Wes Montgomery and George Benson came instead to prominence
Presumably recorded for then-thriving Prestige Records, "Iron City!" was first issued in 1972 on Cobblestone Records and again in 1978 on Muse. Now, a whole new generation of jazz listeners can hear how forceful the guitarist could be in the right funk. Freed from the constraints of well-rehearsed Blue Note staidness, Green and company let loose here in a rip-roaring, mostly up-tempo program of solid winners.
Grant Green's music is very pure but it is not limited to jazz. Green incorporated a darker, more velvety feel with elements of Motown, funk and even Doors-esque psychedelia!
Modern acid jazzers are now becoming hip to Green and it's a timely reissue of this classic album.

Ben Dixon incidentally is still around. He did an album under his own name with Adam Scone recently which remarkably recaptures his classic sound(Say Yes To Your Best), then appears on a "straight Jazz" album with me on organ (James Spaulding on Alto). What impresses me the most about Ben Dixon is way his playing is so rhythmic yet creatively melodic at the same time, so when you play with him, you're really thinking about what he's saying and building off it... hence that classic symbiosis you hear on almost all of the sessions he plays on.
