Product Description

Review

"This is an important and original book, dealing not simply with Iron Age archaeology, but with the very foundations of British society." - Colin Renfrew

"This is an occasion for celebration...the book is readable, abundantly illustrated and has full bibliographic references. Its severest critic should give it a resounding welcome." - Stanley Thomas, New Scientist

Product Description

For more than 20 years Barry Cunliffe's monumental survey of the British Iron Age has been a standard source. But the mass of new evidence (more than 700 new papers and books have been published in a decade) and the quite radical change in emphasis which has occurred in prehistoric studies has required a complete revision of the book. This new, third, edition retains the qualities which produced the critical acclaim which greeted the first two editions, but the changes are substantial. The text has been completely revised, new sections have been introduced and all illustrations have been redrawn for the book. Likewise new photographs have been taken of all the sites. The result is, once again, a classic of British archaeology.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reference book, 18 Feb 2011

I like Barry Cunliffe's approach to pre-Roman Britain and I'm delighted to have this among my reference books. He describes the different regions of Britain and the different ways in which they were farmed, lived in and defended. It's a sensible book which smashes a lot of romantic myths about the Warrior Celts. Prof Cunliffe talks knowledgeably about farming which, after all, was the main occupation of British people in the Iron Age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iron Age, 14 Nov 2010

Sue Burden (Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The ultimate guide to Iron Age Britain for the student through to the proffessional Archaeologist. The paperback has made this academic book availaible and affordable to all.
One comment made on the above scentance said this review was of no help if you have not seen the hardback version of the book. For futher help, the author is one of the leading Archaeologist in this particular area (the Iron Age) and with each updated edition of this book further updated research seems to have been added. Barry Cunliffe covers the development of the iron age across the whole of UK with text and illistration and uses his vast experience to bring the Iron Age archaeological record to life.
If this review does not help you to buy the book one way or the other, I would go to a library, or remember there is a return service!
