The Irish Water Spaniel may have evolved from water dogs 700 or more years ago. In fact, some have been able to link the breed's heritage to Persian manuscripts that existed 4000 years ago. However, these early specimens were not like the Irish Water Spaniel that we recognise today. These ancient water spaniels had only a few of the features of today's modern breed. Like many other sporting breeds of the time, the Irish Water Spaniel's true origin remains uncertain and debatable. The facts about how the breed actually came into existence will probably always remain a mystery. Our best source of information comes from some early books and manuscripts that identified a breed that closely resembled the Irish Water Spaniel. Some references indicate that the Irish Water Spaniel may have originated from the Afghan Hound or even the Greyhound. The breed's high-domed head, crowned with a top-knot of loose curls, bears some resemblance to the Afghan Hound. Its sloping rear is similar to that of the Greyhound. Although these theories exist, no solid evidence is available to link the Irish Water Spaniel to these breeds. However, it is quite certain that the Irish Water Spaniel was very inbred, perhaps even the most inbred of all dogs.
