Astounding

Bryden Thomson was one of my favorite conductors. He could generate electricty and lyricism in some of the most obscure works in the repertoire. This CD contains some of his best recordings. It is an early digital recording from 1980, but the sound is excellent, except for some slight whiteness to the violins. I have the Naxos recording of An Irish Symphony, too. The orchestra on Naxos is better, but Thomson's interpretation is just stunning, real compulsive listening. The work has much to recommend it, as it offers color and melody in a seamless manner. It is highly Romantic in its genre, but the orchestration is perfect and there is not a wasted note. Thomson's performance of it is edge of your seat Romanticism. A Comedy Overture is a pleasant diversion, agreeably performed. If you never have experienced the Art of Bryden Thomson, this CD is a great place to start.
