Product Description

Synopsis

This collection contains a varied selection of widely played and lesser known tunes, divided into different rhythms: double jigs, slides, slip jigs, reels, hornpipes, set dances and airs. The range of the tunes are particularly suitable for the fiddle but can be used for other instruments. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is, minus the one tune, #101 - "Henry McDermott Roe", Appendix A from Matt Cranitch's excellent fiddle tutor, "The Irish Fiddle Book" ~

The Irish Fiddle Book (CD Edition)

& the real PLUS, the reason I'm smiling as I recommend this, yet again, is the accompanying CD. The CD is made up of most of the tracks from two recordings that were produced to accompany "The Fiddle Book". They are "Take a Bow" OSS CD 5 & "Give it Shtick" OSS CD 6, Ossian Publications, 1988/1992:

Take a Bow & Give It Shtick

The CD provides recordings for 50 of the 100 transcriptions in the book, and it's great for just listening too - excellent ear training and soul stirring.

The musicians are ~

Matt Cranitch - fiddle
Dave Hennessy - melodeon
Eoin Ó Riabhaigh - uilleann pipes
Bríd Cranitch - piano & harpsichord
Mick Daly - guitar
Tom Stephens - guitar ("Take a Bow")
Colm Murphy - bodhran

The tracks are, with a single or double asterisk to distinguish which of the two recordings they originate from, and giving the track and tune numbers too.

Be careful! This is just a reprint of the 101 tunes in the back of Matt Cranitch's Irish Fiddle Book. It's not clear from the advertising, but there is nothing in this book that is not in the other book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very handy! 20 Mar 2014

So many common and useful tunes! For fiddle players, there are no bowing markings, however, so for authentic bowing techniques, you must supplement that yourself.
