Product Description

Product Description

This pocket-sized text from the "New Horizons" series examines the Irish famine of 1845-1850, during which over one million of the Irish population died in a crop failure unprecedented in the history of modern Europe. Dependency on the potato as the main source of food brought widespread starvation and disease throughout Ireland and was followed by a mass emigration to Britain, North America, Canada and Australia. This book is published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the famine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Irish Famine - an overview, 7 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I have found Peter Gray's book useful as a basic overview of the Great Famine, and have gone on to research particular areas in more depth from other sources. The facts are presented 'without frills', yet in such a way as not to be overwhelming. The pictures are stunning, and the extracts from immigrant's letters particularly fascinating and emotive. To sum up, this beautifully presented book is very useful for the academic as a starting point, and is also a very 'good read' for anyone interested in this subject.
