Product Description

Product Description

From United's earliest days as Newton Heath, the club had links with the local Irish community. However, it was only after the war with Johnny Carey, and then two Busby Babes, Jackie Blanchflower and Liam Whelan, that the links began to bring trophies to United. But if there was one man who cemented the club in the affections of the Irish, it was George Best, who inspired a generation with his glorious skills. Since then a series of players have made the trek across the Irish Sea - Sammy McIlroy, Norman Whiteside, Denis Irwin, Roy Keane and John O'Shea among them - and they have been accompanied by increasing numbers of fans, who take the ferries and planes to come and cheer on their idols at Old Trafford. In John White's fascinating and passionate book, he looks at not only at the Irish stars who have helped make United what it is, but also finds out the fans' stories. They recall their experiences following the club, and their most special memories of a love that crosses all boundaries in Ireland: the Reds and the Irish united as one.

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

As a born and bred Belfast United fan, I found John's story of the Irish and Manchester United fan irresistible to put down as it was touching to read. If ever anyone, anywhere, wanted to know why thousands of people in Ireland support Manchester United then look no further than Irish Devils. John has dug really deep to unearth why Manchester United are Ireland's most favourite, and best supported, football club. John's writing is captivating and transports you back to bygone days which do not even exist on film as he begins his story with the first Great Famine which ravaged Ireland in 1845 and the resulting migration of hundreds of Irish families to Manchester. John has put his story together in a bewitching style which will captivate the reader. Irish Devils is a totally enchanting and enthralling book and one you will definitely want to have in your collection.

Manchester United and the Irish is an unbreakable bond that has lasted for many generations of United fans who passionately follow the club from across the Irish Sea. I doubt if any other club , including the Old Firm clubs, has a larger Irish following than Manchester United and Johns book charts this remarkable story from the formation of the club to the present day. You just have to be at Old Trafford on a match day and the many Irish accents heard are unmistakable. The Irish love United and Irish devils tells us just why they do. This book is the definitive story about Manchester United and the people of Ireland as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable read!

THE ONE & ONLY 29 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
John's recent book on Manchester United is easily his best yet. I am working in Mexico at present and the Mexicans are fanatical football fans but the Irish's love affair with Manchester United has no equal in the world of football. How one nation has taken a football club to its heart is told by John in his Irish Devils book. This is a football book for United fans first and foremost but it is also a must read sports book for any fan of the beautiful game. I am an Irish United fan and after reading this excellent story I learned so much about the many gifted players who crossed the Irish Sea in search of fame and glory at Old Trafford. John's book is an enjoyable, fascinating, intriguing and utterly compelling read.
