I've enjoyed most of the Rosie Thomas books I've read, but this is definately one of her best. It is has two story lines - Iris' great romance during the war and the current thread which relates to her granddaughter Ruby. It is very good on the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters and their unspoken expectations of each other. I also enjoyed the setting in Cairo, and the juxtaposiiton of the new and old.

A good and easy, but still intelligent read.

I really loved this book.

The writing is fantastic and you really can smell and feel the atmosphere of bustling Cairo.

There was not one dull moment and it is one of those books that you can't wait to read the ending but also sad that it has finished.
The characters are realistic, they are not always entirely lovable but this book really does make you consider and cherish your own family relationships.

This book lightened my life whilst I was reading it - thoroughly recommended!

I could not put this book down. Absolutely wonderful narrative, you feel like you are journeying along with the two women. I was really sorry to finish it and just felt that I had read something really special.
