4.0 out of 5 stars A little gem 22 May 2010
By Rachel
What a nice surprise, I wanted to see this movie since viewing the interview about the film, with Marianne Faithfull on French TV, but never got round to it and saw it on DVD 18 months later. This is a highly recommandable movie and quite funny, the cast is excellent and Marianne is outstanding. The story is about a 50 something years old woman desperate to find money for last chance surgery to save her grand son, for that she needs about 6000 pounds. Jobwise her prospects are rather dim, she hasnt got qualifications and the job market is clearly not fitted for a 50 years old woman. She ends up working in a sex parlour giving men some favours with her skilfull hands, she is so good at her job that she is overwhelmed by demand. The story looks completly unexpected but I fully adhered to it. We are spared any crude words or images but it works and Faithfull is so enchanting that you dont want the movie to end, even if it ends rather well for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 27 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Very unusual subject matter. Heart-wrenching and hilarious at the same time - a difficult thing to achieve! The script and acting (particularly the older characters) are wonderful and totally believable, and when Maggie finally tells her old friends what her secret 'job' is I laughed more than I have in years. Marianne please, please appear in more films because I believe you are up there with the likes of Kathy Bates, Dame Judy Dench, Kate Winslet et al. Well worth five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars It has all the right ingredients... 20 Jun 2012
By Miss M
The film has a very slow pace which is perfect for this story. Marianne Faithful is brilliant in her role as a grandmother who goes to great lengths to ensure her grandson gets the help he needs, even if that means doing some "unethical" work. There is one scene where she meets up with her snobby village friends and finally tells them what she does for a living ... absolutely wonderful! I can highly recommend this film, make sure you have some tissues nearby, you'll need them to dry your tears... from laughter and from feeling for/with this remarkable woman.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Got 6 Jan 2011
If your purchasing any Soda Production Films be aware that you may not get what you wished for.....My mum was eagerly awaiting her copy of 'Irina Palm' and even though the disc provided was printed as such, the actual film on the disc was a heavily subtitled Albanian film about a boat called 'La Leon'! My mum like the odd arthouse flick but not when she's expecting a good comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. 21 Feb 2011
I loved Irina Palm, Faithfull was fab as Maggie, the downtrodden yet calming influence on all around her, she is placid, shy even, yet proves she will do anything to help the Grandson she adores, despite hassle from her brat of a sulky son.

This film just goes to show what a person will do for love, or what they will do when they HAVE to, Maggie can stick up for herself though and the ending is most satisfying. Great film, I could watch it again and again, recommended, try it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Fil 10 April 2014
By O'Keef

Marianne Faithfull plays an aging Mother in need of money for her son's medical expenses.
She finds a job in a Soho sex club were she gets her name for the service she provides.
A moving story that shows the depth of the star's acting talent as she struggles with what
she has to do, to help her son and the kind work that will get her the amount of money she
needs to help her son.
A loving Mother wanting to help her son, then being punished for her sacrefice and love.
One tint draw back with this DVD.... It comes with Dutch subtitles that cannot be turned off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chance viewing, but loved it. 25 Mar 2014

Watched this by chance on Greek satellite TV. Slow, slightly depressing start but this lures you into a false sense of security. This is a very quirky British film, but had me hooting with laughter, as well as finding it very touching.
