Iridium 9575 Extreme 8 Sep 2013
By Dale E. Matson - Published on Amazon.com
I replaced my Iridium 9555 with the Extreme. The new features that I use and that appeal to me are the more rugged case which is shock and water resistant. It is slightly thinner and lighter. I also like the GPS features with the Lat/Lon coordinates available. The red panic button adds a similar feature to the "SPOT" emergency beacon. It will both call and send a text message to a designated person(s) in an emergency. For me though, most contacts are just an assurance call to my wife at home and to let her know where I am spending each night. This phone can also be linked to a lap top for messaging. Don't forget, a satellite phone isn't just helpful for you and your trail/wilderness companions. It might just help out someone else on the trail.
Cons. I did not give it a 5 star rating because you now have to connect a cradle to the bottom of the phone to charge it. Additionally, The overall length is determined by the top of the antenna which makes the unit longer than it needs to be. The Antenna is more sturdy though than the 9555. In order to keep the costs down, I buy the basic plan and pay the per minute fee when calling out. My other phone is a no contract cellular phone and both combined cost less than most smart phone plans. This is life insurance in the wilderness. I would also caution that a Satellite phone needs plenty of open sky to connect. Down in canyons, it is iffy. I suppose open water or the desert would be ideal conditions for connectivity.

Lightweight, heavy duty, well engineered, fast satellite acquisition, clear audio on both ends. It could always be smaller but its still outstanding!

*** UPDATE 03/23/14

The GPS feature has been extremely useful. I can SMS text my location from the phone as soon as the phones GPS acquires my location. It sends my lat/lon as well as a weblink so you can click on it to see where the position is in a google earth style page.
Works well so far. 1 Oct 2014

I just hope it doesn't have the same battery issues that I've read about from others. I have, on a couple of occasions, had to restart the phone to get it to search for satellites. The voice quality is actually better than I expected, but maybe my expectations were too low!

The inclusion of the gps makes this a great emergency phone. 23 Nov 2013

I enjoy having the ability to send my current location in case of an emergency with the built in GPS. The panic button to enable that function was a great idea. I enjoy the more rugged aspect. The data transmission rate is a drawback.
