4.0 out of 5 stars Sweden In The Raw 10 May 2013
By prisrob TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
I am always on the lookout for a police/procedural/mystery series, and if it is found in Europe, all the better. I came across the 'Irene Huss' series by chance, and it is a winner!

Taken from the writings of Helene Tursten, this crime thriller series lends its way to film very well. Set in Gotenberg, Sweden, gritty seaside port city, the crimes are varied and some quite unusual. The star of this series is Angela Kovacs, who plays Irene Huss. A more natural actor you will not find. She lends herself to the simplicity of intelligent thought and careful mastery of detective work. She is a wife, mother of twin daughters, and a full time detective. From the get go, we can tell she is the go to detective of her department. The others are all intelligent, but have some sort of personality quirk. Irene is quick to pick up clues, quick to win trust of the victims and quick to go off on her own into unsettled and violent areas. However, with her quick wit and physical acuity she is able to sidestep most of the problems she runs into. We are privy to her family life with her chef husband and teenage daughters.
Irene is a real person, a real woman with wants, desires and the ability to manipulate her environment. Angela Kovacs is this series, and it is apparent to everyone.

I have not read any of Helene Tursten's books, but I will be on the lookout for them. This is a series of an intelligent and attractive woman, and often that is an enigma.

Recommended. prisrob 05-10-13

4.0 out of 5 stars An exception to the norm...... 9 Mar 2011
in that we have a female detective who is not unhappy in her personal life,or depressed,or fighting against sexist male colleagues.
The series successfully combines the professional, and domestic, sides of Irene Huss's life, with the latter featuring some nice performances from the actors portraying Irene's husband, and daughters.
All the films have interesting plots, and, can contain some unexpected violent scenes.
Angela Kovacs, who played Ann-Britt Hogland in several episodes of the first series of Krister Henriksson's 'Wallander',is excellent in the lead role.
A point of correction is that the series does not date from 1998,but 2007/8.

Crime series based on Helene Tursten's books about police detective Irene Huss from Gothenburg who is specialised in solving extremely violent crimes. Angela Kovács does a great job as the tough police woman who tries to balance family life with the horrors she experiences in her job and the other characters are also very well cast.

So why only 3 stars? Well, the stories are not quite up to the standards that we usually expect from the Nordic crime writers and there is some way before Irene Huss reaches Sarah Lund (of The Killing), Wallander (Henning Mankell's character), Mikael Blomquist & Lisbeth Salander (of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy) or Beck (created by Sjöwall and Wahlöö) levels. Still, I would recommend this DVD to fans of the above series.

Each movie-length episode can be watched individually but I would recommend starting with episode 1 to get a proper introduction to Irene and her family and colleagues.

There are now 12 films in the series of which only the first 6 have been translated into English. I really hope they translate the last ones as well as they are all of superior quality to the first installments.
The Torso - Tatuerad Torso
The Horse Figurine - Den krossade tanghaesten
The Fire Dance - Eldsdansen
The Night Round - Nattrond
The Glass Devil - Glasdjaevulen
The Gold Digger - Guldkalven

Anyone who watches in the dark - Den so vakar i moerkret
The Deceitful Web - Det lomska Natet
A man with a Small Face - En mand me litet ansikte
Ring of Silence - Tystnadens Cirkel
Chasing a Witness - Jagat Vittne
Under the cover of Shadows - I Skydd af Skuggorna
