Product Description

Product Description

This book surveys Irish history in the first half of this millennium, written in a style which will make it accessible to those new to the subject, incorporating the findings of recent research, and offering a reinterpretation of the evidence. Rather than having the English invasion as its starting point, as is previous practice, the volume places it as its centrepiece, and traces in detail the pre-invasion background. While acknowledging the importance of the English invasion as the single most formative development in Irish secular affairs, this book emphasises the importance of politics in native Ireland, which has sometimes in the past been neglected.

Format:Paperback
Sean Duffy's book Ireland in the Middle Ages provides an excellant introduction to the period in question. It focuses on the Norman Conquest of Ireland by centreing it in the narrative, providing a juxtaposition of pre- and post-conquest Ireland, unlike many other studies which begin with the conquest. His text is engaging and easy to follow. It assumes no prior knowledge about the period, thus providing a perfect explanatory basis for further study. Those interested by the period should perhaps go on to read the excellant works of R.R. Davies on Norman expansion and the construction of national identities.
