I recommend this book to everybody who is both interested in Irish food and in visiting or staying in Ireland. The author goes straight to the heart of the matter on the back cover "Irish cuisine is no oxymoron". This excellent book sets out to prove this statement and provide much more. The book not only covers Irish food, but drink (an affection for Irish Whiskey is evident) and is a good guide of how to both enjoy yourself and get on with the Irish. If you were to read and follow the advice in this book, you can change from being a mere "tourist" to become a "visitor" to Ireland.
The book provides a good well balanced description of both the good and avoidable aspects of Irish food and drink. As an Irishman living abroad, I agree with his description of the land, its food and people. There is a fair amount of humour in this book with passages from Irish authors, which display the Irish tendency to self deprecation, which should not be confused with any form of weakness. I think that reading it before any visit to Ireland, in particular, if one is going to visit friends and family in Ireland, would be an excellent idea. Lonely Planet books are about straight talking and good useful advice and this book is a good example of that credo.
