This CD, issued on the LPO label, preserves for us the John Ireland 70th. birthday concert of 10th. September 1949, broadcast by the BBC from the Royal Albert Hall. It is an interesting issue which gives great pleasure. Considering the venue (the Albert Hall in those days had a 'difficult' acoustic) the recording of all four works, the 'London Overture', the Piano Concerto, 'The Forgotten Rite' and 'These Things Shall Be', which involves a soloist and a large choir, is very good. All the performances are full of life. The Piano Concerto, very tuneful and popular, understandably gets a huge reception from the audience - the soloist, Eileen Joyce, gives a splendid account of it. The two purely orchestral works are fine, vivid and full of life if with very occasional slight uncertainty in the ensemble. In terms of performance and the quality of the piece itself, 'The Forgotten Rite' is for me the highlight of the CD. Boult demonstrating his considerable skill in the phrasing and pacing of lyrical, atmospheric music. 'These Things Shall Be' is a serious piece which tries very hard, perhaps too hard, but here is done as well as anyone could wish (and with great conviction from the excellent Luton Choral Society ; Redvers Lewellyn, the very committed baritone soloist, is good too, even if his singing has a rather 'period' flavour, but perhaps that is a plus). Considering everything - not long after wartime, the LPO not in its best shape, the venue - this is a fine CD and well worth investigating.
