Product Description

Three-part documentary about war-torn Iraq, giving three intimate portraits of life through the eyes of Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds. In the first part, a fatherless 11-year-old is apprenticed to the domineering owner of a Baghdad garage. In the second part, Sadr followers in two Shiite cities rally for regional elections while enforcing Islamic law at gunpoint. In the final segment, a family of Kurdish farmers welcomes the US presence, which has allowed them a measure of freedom previously denied. The film garnered several awards in the year of its release including Best Documentary Director at the Sundance Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17 Aug 2009
By MJ
An unusual documentary by a very courageous filmmaker - Longley did almost everything down to the music on this work and you can feel how close he gets to ordinary Iraqis with this minimalist approach. The portraits of the boys at work are masterful. But the most impressive "fragment" is the one that shows the influence of Shia fundamentalists in the South. Seldom has a film brought home just how fanatical and uncompromising the atmosphere was in parts of war-torn Iraq just before it became impossible for independent filmmakers to work there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 6 Jun 2008
I really enjoyed the doc. The cinematography was beautiful and warm. I agree with the other reviewer that the best feature about this film was the fact that only the people in the doc was talking instead of being interviewed. With the voice overs it felt like you were watching a film as you couldn't help but feel that the camera seemed invisible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece in Documentary Film making 12 April 2010
A story in 3 parts, 3 locations, the film maker takes you inside Iraq shortly after the invasion. Beautifully shot with an outstanding audio track - documentary does not get much better than this.
