Book Description

4 Nov 2010 1846684234 978-1846684234 Reprint
In August 2002 the National Council of the Resistance in Iran (NCRI) revealed in Washington to a stunned world how advanced Iran's nuclear programme was. And in September 2009 US President Barack Obama exposed yet another clandestine nuclear site there, bringing the possibility of a nuclear arsenal ever closer. For seven fruitless years the international community has been too divided to counter this threat. Russia and China view Iran as a tool to counter US influence. US efforts to engage Iran have yielded no results. Sunni Arab governments fear Iran, but are powerless to keep it in check. And Israel, fearing that the bomb will be used against them, might decide on a pre-emptive strike, with drastic consequences for the region.Preventing Iran from building a nuclear arsenal is a European priority. But the EU is Iran's biggest commercial partner: Europe's strategic and economic interests collide. Iran: the Looming Crisis is a new and completely revised edition of Emanuele Ottolenghi's well-received Under a Mushroom Cloud (2009). Fully updated to take account of the current diplomatic stalemate, the latest developments in Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, Obama's diplomatic overtures, the re-election of President Ahmadinejad, and mounting protest within Iran against oppression, this uncompromising analysis offers a compelling answer to the dilemmas facing the West.

"Injects much needed urgency, colour and clarity into the debate on Iran" - the Economist

"An important contribution to the debate about Europe's approach to Iran ... well-informed, perceptive and sobering. I hope our leaders will read what Dr Ottolenghi has to say" - General Charles Guthrie, Chief of the British Defence Staff (1997-2001), Colonel Commandant of the SAS

"How to deal with Iran is one of the most pressing foreign policy issues of the day. Dr Ottolenghi provides a useful guide to the challenge and how to meet it" - Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies and Vice Principal, King's College London

Most Helpful Customer Reviews on Amazon.com (beta)
Amazon.com: 4.0 out of 5 stars  1 review
4.0 out of 5 stars Dry, compelling, though possibly biased. 14 April 2012
By Matthew M. Howell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A bit dry, but ultimately compelling compilation of the extensive number and nature of Iran's theocratic governing regime's violations of the non-proliferation agreement, (legion,) their prevarications regarding same, (multiple, intentional, and varied in nature,) and the probable impact on the region should they succeed, (not good - for anybody.) In the end argues for increased sanctions with real teeth. The publisher, a conservative American think-tank formed immediately post 9-11, must of course, be taken into account.
