Product Description

Gideon Clarke is a man on a quest. He is out to prove to the world, as his father tried before him, that the world-champion Chicago Cubs traveled to Onamata, Iowa, in the summer of 1908 for an exhibition game against all-stars from the Iowa Baseball Confederacy, an amateur league. The game, which was to be short, pleasant, and, the Cubs thought, one-sided, turned into a titanic battle of over two thousand innings, played mostly in the pouring rain. This game is not on the record books. No one remembers it or the Confederacy. But Gideon Clarke knows it happened, and he is determined to set the record straight.

Kinsella really captures what baseball was truly about in its golden-age. The author's fertile imagination creates some of the most interesting characters I have ever come across, like a fifteen-foot tall Indian or a statue playing right-field. The era is also very well recreated.

All in all, a classic novel of baseball and life.

A must read for all baseball fans!

I cannot get enough of the way the author uses baseball to write stories that challenge the imag ination. Gideon Clarke takes over the quest of his late father to prove the 1908 Cubs travelled to Iowa to take on a local all star team. No one else remembers the game, nor is it in any records. Kinsella takes us through time and introduces us to not only the Cubs and the all stars but many other great characters. It is also a journey of great ramifications for Gideon's life. You do not have to be a Cub fan to enjoy this book. Just let your imagination carry you through this wonderful story. Please keep writing baseball stories Mr. Kinsella!!!!

You don't have to be a Cubs fan to love The Iowa Baseball Confederacy...but it helps. Kinsella has hit another home run with this magical tale of time travel and baseball in the midwest. I find his writing similar to that of Jack Finney in that he pursuades his readers that the most impossible things might actually happen, especially the things you dream most about. Suspend your disbelief, imagine the past, and step into it.
