A backup device and more, 3 Feb 2008
This review is from: Iomega ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive - Digital AV player - HDD 500 GB (Electronics)
Went out to buy a straightforward 500GB external hard drive but bought this instead. An excellent product, nice build quality, quite heavy but not bulky. Plug and Play worked perfectly with XP, recognised immediately as a USB Mass Storage Device. Simplicity to drag and drop files and a pretty fast write speed. Runs very quietly. Blue LED powerlight. Not truely portable as it requires mains power. The major advantage over and "ordinary" hard drive is it's ability to display JPEG picture files, play DIVX Movies and MP3 music. You can output the media to a TV set. All the leads you need (apart from a scart) are supplied. Obviously you can store whatever additional files you want e.g. documents. The drive is already formatted but there is no file structure so you create it exactly as you want. I have tried it with photo's connected to a 42" plasma screen and pictures are excellent. Also worked well with DIVX movies but note it wouldn't play AVI files. It comes with a very slim full function remote allowing you for example to rotate and zoom in on photo's and fast forward, rewind, pause etc. on video. I haven't yet tried it with MP3's but I guess there must be home cinema systems or amplifiers you can connect it to. There is a digital coaxial connection on the back of the machine. Obviously this costs a bit more than an equivalent 500GB hard drive but for me it was well worth the premium.

Fantastic!, 22 April 2008
This review is from: Iomega ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive - Digital AV player - HDD 500 GB (Electronics)
I bought this last summer, thinking how handy it would be to have a film jukebox. I've been ripping my collection and copying it to this wee drive ever since. Still not managed to fill it. I don't find it noisy and it plays my avi files without any problem. I love that I can go from "I wanna watch.." to actually watching it in seconds. I keep it in on standby most of the time so it's always available when there's nothing on regular telly. Only negative I have found is the remote control. Feels a bit cheap and isn't as responsive as others I've used.

Too Noisy by far!!, 21 Jan 2009
This review is from: Iomega ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive - Digital AV player - HDD 500 GB (Electronics)
This unit has a very noisy hard drive. You are made very aware of it during the quieter parts of a movie such as conversation. I would have thought that Iomega would have sourced whisper quiet hard drives for a device that is intended to play multimedia. I could send it back to Europe (which will cost be about £20.00 with insurance) or I'll probably put up with it until the warranty expires and then fit a new drive myself. The remote is awful (looks like a steam roller ran over) it and the menu system for file access is to say the least a little primitive.
