I love this product. I use it as a media player to watch films, TV Shows etc. I also use it to store my music and photo's. Real easy to use, hook it up to your PC and click and drag files over to the player. You can create files and name them yourself, Films, Photo's etc, keeps it all tidy and sorted. It's also small enough to take away on holiday, came with component and composite cables, plus USB cable. Also has a HDMI socket but never came with a HDMI cable.

Pros:

1 Cheap and tons o memory

2 Sturdy build, feels substantial in your hands

3 No PC interface needs to be installed, just a lovely drag-and-drop external hard drive, it does the media bits for you

4 SCART interface usually makes harddisk media players expensive, it's nice to have different input options

5 It just worked *great*, straight out of the box

Cons:

1 Can't upgrade to different file formats, I knew this to be the case before buying, but it would still be nice to develop it, but that's what keeps it cheap

2 It took me ages to work out that to select a folder within a folder you have to press the right arrow key, I kept pressing play instead and playing the whole folder.

I've not tested it for HDMI etc, as other reviewers have, but I have found this to be a pretty brilliant piece of kit for my needs. The negative points are AOK with me cos of the bargainous price.

I bought this as an addition to my Archos which i take with me travelling, this sits on the TV. I am not very technically minded or even a wiz with my pc, however I just plugged it in, computer immediately found a driver for it and showed it as an additional external drive.
I made 2 directories, Videos and music, and dragged them fronm my Hard drive straight into the respective directories. When i connected to the TV via the HDMI lead (not supplied) the TV immediately found it, sometimes i have to initialise the Archos a couple of times to get the TV to see it. Straight to the directories, the manual says navigate using up down arrows and play, however i found out the only arrows you need to press on the remote control is the left and right arrow to navigate into the directories, then up and down to select, then push play and everything works! Not had any problems with it, it does what it says plays all your media files, does appear to run a little hot but reading reveiews of other products a lot seem to. I would recommend this easy to set up and use kit..

I wont repeat what other viewers have said already, except to say that this an excellent piece of kit. As to the negative reviews of it as a music player and its limited capacity in displaying mpegs, the former has no validity at all unless the reviewer was unfortunate in the paticular machine sent to him. Mine plays music seemlessly and without fault, not clicks or pauses. The Mpeg complaint is certainly valid. I bought the machine to store and play the videoes we take of our grandchildren. It will not play the formats used by Canon or Sony and the sound on Mpeg 2 formats is extremely iffy. Fortunateley I have a converter on my comupter which allows me to change my files to XVID Movie which do play and play excellently. I've just watched my 18 month old grandson running about excitedly in a toyshop, full screen in Movie picture perfection on our Panasonic TV. I would have given the Screenplay five stars if it I had not had the buggeration of Mpeg conversion.

Top product!
I have backed up all my films onto this device to save me digging about for the DVD discs everytime my son wants to watch one of his Pixar movies.
Excellent quality picture playing Avi files - which takes up smaller memory on the device.

Only 3 faults I can point out which I can live with:
- whine from the hard drive during playback is a bit annoying but is only heard when there is no sound or its really quiet in the films
- HDMI connectivity - there seems to be issues re this. Although I think it may be my TV (Panasonic Viera) and the HDMI firmware "handshake", none the less I used the other cables in the box to ensure same quality playback.
- I am not sure if it can play back all media file types. .mkv files would be good but doesn't seem to support so true HD content doesn't seem to be possible.

For the money its a winner!

I bought this product in November 2008 and it turned out to be a good reliable product. I mainly use it as a hard drive and transferred all my recordings/songs on to it. With this I can watch AVI videos, listen to mp3 songs and look at JPEG images. It has a SCART socket, which is very handy, and other connection types. I connected this product to a rear projection TV, a 40" LCD TV and a traditional TV and it was fine. Because of it's size you can carry this product around as well. Once I took it to my friends house and it was without any problem. Remote control is not very powerful but if you point it at the drive or near by it will be ok, I checked other multimedia hard drives and maybe one third of them use the same remote. Perhaps it could be more responsive when you don't aim at SCreenplay but when you do aim at it no problems. You can tell when the multimedia drive is working because you can hear a sound when you are very close to it but I tell you it is not more than the sound of our SKY box. So overall I recommend this product.
