OK so I've read other's reviews of this. I'm sorry but I have had NONE of these problems. I've had this a few months and I absolutely love the unit.

There IS NO loss of 20GB of data - the other guy just doesn't understand computers' memory.

This is a small unit - about the size of palm pilot (8.1 cm x 13.1 cm x 1.5 cm) and very light (190g). I tend to carry it around quite a lot in a carry case and sometimes think I've lost it cos it's so light (I'm not joking!)

Also, I've either been lucky or others unlucky. I don't have any problem with the USB port - and I much prefer not needing any other powering of the unit. Hey you MIGHT lose some speed with downloading stuff onto it but I prefer the ease of use with just being powered by the extrenal source (Pc or WD unit or whatever).

So, you've probably guessed I'm a big fan? Quite right. I have 3 other Hard disk units but this is definitely my favourite!

I have just purchased this hard drive. After formatting the drive, it works fine with both my MacBook and PC. I use a PS3 controller cable to get around the problem of the Y-cable. I've read some reviews complaining about the loss of space, 298GB usable space, but this is true of all hard drives, just remember to take 7% off the total size to get the true size.

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE REVIEWS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CABLE. These people do not know what they are talking about, you dont NEED 2 USB ports.

The cable supplied allows the drive to draw additional power from another USB port in the situation where your PC cannot provide enough power through 1 USB port. If you have a PC or lap top made in the last 10 years, there is very little chance that you will require the additional USB port. It is a precaution rather than a necessity.

I have transferred 150 Gb of data in one go on an 8 year old lap top and it worked fine.

No loss of data, reasonalbe transfer speeds and silent.

I cannot comment on the reliability as have only got it today, although a friend recommended this one and has used it nearly every day for a year and has had no problems at all.

Didn't buy this from Amazon but from a local store in Dublin. Just wasn't recognized by the laptop. Thankfully I was able to return it and the new one works fine. The difference between the two? The first had a loose connector which didn't grip socket of the drive. I'm guessing it's a common problem. When testing the replacement drive, the store assistant tried to hold it down with his hand, suggesting that the slightest movement will cause a loss of connection. Avoid.

I bought this product brand new from Dell to go with my new laptop (and to help with transferring my files across). Brand new out of the box it was recognised by Windows as being 'Corrupted and not recognised'. After going round in circles with Iomega technical support they finally acknowledged that the drive was defective and offered to 'let' me send it back at my cost to the Netherlands - where their technical department is. They also gave me the option of sending them twenty Euros in exchange for a prepaid return label.

I agree with all the other reviews on the internet about the USB cable. This drive requires two USB ports (on the same side of the computer) which I was not aware of when I bought it. The USB cable is very short and very poor quality, and difficult to find a replacement for as it is a 'Y' cable. The connection to the drive itself is very loose and comes out extremely easily - the drive does not grip the cable in the slightest!

Overall I am very disappointed with the drive and Iomega themselves. I am now in the process of trying to get Dell to accept the drive back so I can have a refund (I don't want another one of these!!!) or at least an exchange so I can have a different manufacturer.
